  • Wild camping in north Wales with spectacular mountain views
  • Five minutes’ drive to Clocaenog Forest; Snowdonia 20 minutes
  • Accessible by four wheel drive or on foot; honesty shop on site
Looking for an outdoor break that’s all about mountain views, sunsets and starry night skies? Fancy lots of wide open space and a wild camping adventure? Make your way to Mynydd Derwydd Wild Camping near Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in Conwy. With three camping areas scattered over 250 acres on a hill farm bordering the 16,000-acre Clocaenog Forest, chances are you’ll never see another soul and it’ll feel like you have the whole place to yourselves. And of course, this is wild camping as it should be, with just a few low-key facilities including eco toilets, firepits and firewood (available to buy on site). There's no electricity and no running water without walking or driving from your pitch, so you'll need to come along armed with torches and a supply of drinking water for a comfortable stay. Being a little way from urban development, it's also a good idea to bring along some food (Ruthin, 15 minutes' drive away, has the nearest sizeable shops). However, do save space (and bring cash) for the site's honesty box, which has free-range eggs, rapeseed oil, dressings and mayonnaise, all produced on the farm, as well as delicious homemade cakes and biscuits for treat time – it’s available 24/7. Please note: access to the pitches is only possible in a four wheel drive vehicle. There is secure off-road parking and use of a wheelbarrow for guests without such a beast, plus a sherpa service to take your belongings to and from your pitch.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything. Stunning views that showcase the beauty of rural North Wales. With accessibility only suitable for 4x4 vehicles or on foot, you get a sense of adventure and exclusivity. We were spoilt for choice on where to pitch up well away from neighbouring campers. The friendly farmer is very helpful and provides a great sherpa service if required. He really made us feel welcome. It is really something to see stars shining so bright in the dark night sky, away from light pollution. Instantly became one of my favourite wild camping site .Will definitely be revisit img lots

Disliked: Nothing, They have the balance just right, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Liked: This was an absolutely amazing site, peaceful and quiet. There were so many places you could pitch up where there's not another tent in site. The farmer was so helpful and helped anywhere he could. Would highly recommend. Thank you for a fantastic stay.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was my first time camping alone, getting away from the madness of real life. I arrived at 1pm on a Saturday and left at 10am on the Sunday and while I was there, I didn't see one single person, not one car, it was perfect and exactly what I needed. Just 15 minute drive from Llyn Brenig which is definitely worth a visit with your bike or paddleboard.

Disliked: Despite enjoying not seeing a single person, maybe seeing the host to point out the toilets and the honesty shop would have been appreciated.

Liked: Views are amazing, field to ourselves surrounded by sheep, not disturbed by anyone once, couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Proper wild camping with the most amazing views and a gorgeous pub down the road. We’ll most definitely be back in summer. Friendly owners and level pitch.

Local attractions

Remote and peaceful this site may well be, but it’s only 20 minutes by car to sporty stuff in Snowdonia National Park, where the pretty town of Betws-y-Coed (25 minutes’ drive) is a good hub for activities ranging from hill walking and biking to high ropes courses. There’s no real need to wander that far away, though, as there are walking trails aplenty in Clocaenog Forest (five minutes' drive). Expert mountain bikers can have days of fun on the downhill trails at Foel Gasnach Bike Park (10 minutes), and novices can practise their skills on green routes at OnePlanet Adventure (half an hour), where you can hire all the gear too. The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour’s drive) has hill walks to limestone pavements and fly fishing for salmon along the River Dee. Trout fishing is to be had on Llyn Brenig lake (15 minutes), where visitors can also get out on the water in sailing dinghies. Hit a rainy day? Browse the art gallery and craft shops at Ruthin Craft Centre (20 minutes).
