  • Pop-up glamping by a renowned trout lake in Hampshire’s Itchen Valley
  • A 15-minute drive to Winchester; 50 minutes to the Isle of Wight ferry
  • Luxury bell tents, angling, pizzas and bar plus wellness sessions
Set around the lakes of a trout fishery, Avington Glamping welcomes all comers to a lovely pocket of Hampshire, incorporating waterside serenity and wild swimming. With the clearwater lakes and a burbling chalk stream, this is a secluded and peaceful spot to relax and reconnect with nature. The renowned Avington fishery – known for its natural beauty and colossal trout – more than covers all your glamping needs, from a luxuriously decked out and proper posh bell tent to your own barbecue or gas stove (both have a small charge). Keen anglers can book fishing lessons, or you might like to hire a paddleboard or kayak to get out on the water. You’re welcome to join wellness and meditation sessions, and up the relaxation factor to new heights with daily yoga classes. Upmarket, on-site catering will shorten your daily to-do list as well. Order Neapolitan pizzas from the wood-fired oven (on Fridays) or grill a trout freshly caught from the lake – and there’s a little pub on site too. After all, it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere. And as this is England, if there is the odd rainy day, kids can be kept entertained by film nights as well as loads of games and toys in the clubhouse. Finally, a couple of house rules: no pets are allowed on the campsite due to the large amount of wildlife around, and as the pitches are right next to the lake, adults are fully responsible for their kids’ safety.

Local attractions

Keep kids happy with steam-train trips on the Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line’ (15 minutes’ drive), meeting endangered species like rhinos and tiger sat Marwell Zoo (25 minutes) or listening to keeper talks at New Forest Wildlife Park (30 minutes). They might also enjoy touring the Tudor warship ‘Mary Rose’ and Nelson’s flagship ‘HMS Victory’ in Portsmouth (45 minutes). Southampton (30 minutes) is the departure point for day trips to the Isle of Wight, for nosing around the indie stores in Yarmouth, daredevil family trips on chair lifts up the cliffs at the Needles Landmark Attraction, or being amazed at the opulence at Osbourne, the palatial former home of Queen Victoria. Ancient Winchester (15 minutes) is steeped in history; history buffs can tour the Gothic cathedral and the Old Bishop’s Palace before following the Itchen river to the restored Winchester City Mill for interactive exhibits, flour-milling displays and the chance to spot otters in the river.
