  • In secluded wooded grounds on the eastern outskirts of London
  • Surrounded by parks and reserves, with easy access to central London
  • Family-friendly and dog-friendly; supermarket 10 minutes' walk away
London calling… if you want it to, that is. Abbey Wood Experience Freedom Glamping’s up on a hillside in the south-east of the city, with views out over the capital’s skyline and some of its most fab open spaces. All of which means that you can rise of a morning, take a look at your surrounds and assess whether you’re in the mood for a city day or you’d rather stick closer to base for fresh-air activities. If it’s the former, stroll down to Abbey Wood station in 15 minutes or so for the half-hour train ride to central London and its many, many (many, many) attractions. And if it just doesn’t feel like a day to be out in the big smoke? Stick to your Greenwich surrounds to wander down to Lesnes Abbey Woods, stretch your legs on the South East London Green Chain walks or head out for days of paintballing, indoor karting or canoeing. Or perhaps you could even just chill out where you are – there’s plenty of space around the park, with a playground to keep the small sorts busy, woods to run about in and picnic tables for alfresco eats (perhaps acquired from the small supermarket 10 minutes’ walk away). Laundry facilities and a shower block are on site for any folk who’ve become a bit mucky on their days out; there’s also a fast wifi connection (no need to mention this to the boss of course – it’s really just there for sharing your pics with the wider world…).

Glamping microlodge

Liked: Grandparents staying in a motorhome and daughter and young grandchild in the glamping pod on the same site. Really easy access into London but with the freedom and space of a beautiful campsite. Lovely double shower meant the shower could be enjoyed by daughter and young grandson at the end of a busy day to wind down Small heater was sufficient to make the pod warm and cosy. Plenty of storage space meant that the limited floor space could be kept free. Fridge was ideal and sufficient for storing milk and basics. Microwave and toaster ideal for our needs of heating nighttime milk and making breakfast scrambled eggs on toast.

Disliked: Might be cramped if more people staying in the pod, but ideal for us.

Camping pod

Liked: Super friendly staff - adaptable and generous. Lovely setting. Lots of trees. Quiet after the days w crowds in London. Pods were fantastic. Had been wild camping for two weeks in the north and pods felt extravagant. Clean accommodations and washrooms, dishwashing area. Well cared for place.

Disliked: Not great cell service. No wifi. This is a trade off and I understand again the importance of unplugging.

Camping pod

Liked: The quiet. The wooded areas. The squirrels and birds. The peaceful environment so close to London. The station and buses within a 5 min walk. The shops with a variety of local and standard outlets, coffee shops, Sainsbury and Coop so close by. The local market on the first Saturday of the month. The spotless facilities and the bin areas kept tidy and clean. The staff, every one of them friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The sofa bed was a bit small and a bit lumpy. The Mosquitos!

Camping pod

Liked: Pod was nice, private, had tea and coffee facilities, close to the bathroom facilities. However..

Disliked: There was no fan or enough ventilation for hot weather stays. A mosquito screen is needed for the small windows and double doors so the room can be open in the evenings. The futon wasn't suitable for 2 people and very uncomfortable. It was advertised as "cozy" but it was very small bumpy and hard.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and feedback. I'm sorry to hear you found the futon bed uncomfortable and that there was a lack of ventilation. I will certainly feed this back to the relevant Team.

Glamping microlodge

Liked: The glamping, lovely site. Would not think that you were in London. Very peaceful and perfect weather. Spacious inside and enough storage room (We bought a lot!)

Disliked: We didn’t have any saucepans which was stated we would have. The sink isn’t great for washing up as there is no room to wet stuff before drying them. Also, the plugs weren’t great at charging phones, but it was to be expected. Other than that, was a perfect 2 days.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank-you for your review Michelle, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay! Sorry that some items were missing or not suitable for your needs. We do take feedback seriously so will make a note of this. Normally we would recommend if any items are missing from your Pod that you speak with the site staff. We look forward to you visiting us again in the future ~Dan

Local attractions

Where to start with London? Well, as a quick overview (deep breath…) how about Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus, the Natural History Museum, Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, boat trips on the Thames, London Zoo, shows in the West End… And there are London attractions closer to home too. A 25-minute train ride from Abbey Wood will take you to Greenwich for the Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory and Peter Harrison Planetarium or walks in Greenwich Park. Head on through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to the Isle of Dogs to gaze up at Canary Wharf’s towers while meeting the residents of Mudchute Farm (one of Europe’s largest inner-city farms). As well as plenty of London attractions, Abbey Wood is in prime position for outdoor activities, such as paintballing, karting, and the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre (35 minutes’ drive). Or have days out at huge spiralling slide ArcelorMittal Orbit (also 35 minutes), canoeing at Danson Park Watersports Centre (10 minutes) or paintballing in Sidcup (25 minutes). The Thames Path is a couple of miles away for folk who’d like a riverside walk or bike ride.
