  • Kirklees Way 10 minutes' drive; 20 to the National Coal Mining Museum
  • Hot tub and private garden; pubs and shops within five minutes’ drive
Designed as a hideaway for loved-up couples, Oak and Stars Hideaway is located in Magdale, a cute West Yorkshire hamlet with far-reaching views across the Holme Valley. The cosy wooden shepherd’s hut is totally private, with a small access gate from a quiet lane where parking is possible. On the inside, the hut has comfy seating and sleeping quarters for two in a proper double bed, plus a well-designed kitchen with all the necessary bits and pieces for simple meals – including a coffee machine for that essential morning cuppa. The bathroom also has all the mod cons, including basin, flushing loo and electric shower. A woodburner sees off any chilly days – the first bag of logs is provided, thereafter there is a charge. Oak and Stars sits in its own enclosed garden and away from prying eyes in woodland in woodland, and Outside the hut comes with its very own woodfired hot tub and private outdoor seating area with a firepit and views towards the Peak District – just the spot for huddling up in the warmth and gazing up at star-studded skies on clear nights. Hinchcliffe’s Farm Shop (10 minutes’ walk) sells all the essentials right on the doorstep, and the closest village is Honley (five minutes’ drive), with a choice of cool restaurants and pubs. Due to the hamlet location of Oak and Stars Hideaway, please keep noise down after 9pm.

Shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: liked the hot tub, the owners were very nice and helpful the cabin and seating area were very cute and cosy especially with the fire pit on.

Disliked: I believe for the amount of money you could get something a lot more private as we probably should of checked a bit more detail as we thought it was on private land and not at the back of there house even tho they left us too it, it was still in the back of our minds. It just wasn’t what we had pictured building up to it.

Shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: The site was well maintained and a perfect romantic getaway. After the initial arrival phone call we had complete privacy, a fob to open the gate for secure parking and even a separate small gate to access to road directly for a short walk to the farm shop. The hot tub was perfect, and the amenities well thought out. There was even leaflets for local takeaways and numbers for taxi's.

Local attractions

Lots of romantic strolls are close at hand: the spectacular 19th-century Lockwood Viaduct has 32 arches spanning its valley, or you can hike up to Folly Dolly Falls (both five minutes’ drive) for a paddle the water, while the longer-distance Kirklees Way hiking trail is only 10 minutes’ drive away. For more daring days out, strap on the skis and practise your parallels, or take a beginner’s lesson at Halifax Ski and Snowboard Centre (half an hour). You can also get to grips with dinghy sailing out on the water at Winscar Reservoir (20 minutes). Prefer gentler pastimes? Have a stroll the steep cobbled streets of Holmfirth, where 'Last of the Summer Wine' was filmed, perhaps window shopping in the arty shops or settling down in a cosy pub for a pint or two of local ale. If you’re a fan of ancient architecture, Shibden Hall (half an hour) is a lovely timber-framed mansion with period rooms to have a nose around. Meanwhile, to experience what working life was like down a mine, take a guided tour of the National Coal Mining Museum for England (20 minutes).
