  • Covered deck with barbecue; private bathroom in hand-painted bathhouse
Anyone who wants to indulge in a spot of forest bathing should make a note of the name Jollydays Glamping. This North Yorkshire site draws visitors with its generously spread out huts (at least 30 metres from your nearest neighbour), which sit in the middle of lush woodland, giving a remote, last-people-on-earth kind of vibe. Worry not, though: you’re not completely cut off from civilisation here, as Jollydays is a short five-minute drive (or a 40-minute walk) from the village of Stamford Bridge, where there are pubs, takeaway spots and convenience stores. Oh, and York is about 20 minutes’ drive on the A166. Stylish and impeccably appointed (not to mention well insulated), each of the modern huts sits on a large raised and covered deck, so you can light up the barbecue (provided) regardless of the weather. If you prefer to cook indoors, the two-ring gas hob ought to be more than enough to whip up simple meals. The huts also have a kingsize bed and a sofa bed (all bedding is included), plus a woodburning stove to keep you nice and toasty of an evening. What about bathroom facilities, you might ask. Well, step inside the fabulous, hand-painted bathhouse to find your own private spacious bathroom with a clawfoot tub, plus wall art and other decorative details. While Jollydays is excellent for a romantic getaway, it's also great for families, and kids will likely appreciate the proximity (and free access, to guests staying two nights or more) to England’s Fairy and Hobgoblin Sanctuary, part of the Northwood Trail (10 minutes' walk), where they can go looking for dragon’s eggs and assorted winged creatures.

Local attractions

Occupying the site of a former RAF station, the Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial (20 minutes’ drive) displays aircraft from the two world wars (including a Spitfire and a German Messerschmitt) and the Cold War. It’s also possible to take a tour of the control tower, or to watch informative short films in the 1930s cinema room. Trails lace the varied landscapes of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Walk or cycle through woodland and river valleys or alongside arable fields, exploring sites like the Yorkshire Arboretum, with a children’s playground, or Castle Howard, an elegant stately home with manicured lawns and lakes. Spend a day in York (20 minutes), delving into the city’s Viking history at the JORVIK Viking Centre, admiring the stained-glass windows and Gothic architecture of the splendid York Minster, or walking atop the medieval city walls. Then do a little shopping at the Shambles, a cobbled street lined with half-timbered buildings.
