General

  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the Medina River in Bandera
  • 45 minutes' drive from missions and attractions in San Antonio
  • Centrally located outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and playground

Yeeha! Pull on your boots and whack on a hat, for you’re about to enter cowboy country. And not just any old cowboy country – the town of Bandera, where the Pioneer River Resort is located, calls itself ‘the Cowboy Capital of the World’.

Those pioneers knew a thing or two about picking a spot to settle – the resort is right on the banks of the Medina River and surrounded by trees for that real country vibe. Facilities have moved on since the days of the Wild West though, so roll your RV into the park and hook your trusty steed up to a whole range of useful services, including electricity, sewerage and cable TV.

Bring your fishing kit along and cast your rod into the river to see what you can hook; you’ll often find fellow guests having a bit of a fish fry of an evening so follow your nose if you need a few tips on catching and cooking.

If you’re tempted to climb into the water to cool off, leave the river behind and head to the outdoor swimming pool for a dip. Adults can also have a bit of a bubble in the hot tub while the kids have fun at the playground – handily, they’re right next door to each other so you can keep an eye on proceedings. Gather all together later to compete in the traditional family way with a game of shuffleboard.

There’s plenty to do around here, but whatever you choose to do you can start your day with a hot shower at the sparklingly clean bathhouse before picking up a free coffee over at reception. And should you happen to pick up a bit of dirt on your hill country roamings, there’s a laundry room on site to take care of that – the clean, spacious facility has a whole bank of washing machines and tumble dryers to make your chores easy.

Being just on the edge of town, you’ve got plenty of choice when you decide to go out to eat – several lipsmacking restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk away, along with some good old country-style bars with music and dancing.

Local attractions

Make like a cowboy and saddle up for a ride out in the private ranches and state parks around Bandera. There are several riding stables in town and a short drive away, catering for all levels from beginner to experienced riders, so just pick the one that suits you. If you’d rather see the professionals in action, head over to the rodeo that takes place a couple of times a week in the summer (usually April to September).

Another good way to see the country is to take to the river – take the five-minute drive to the other side of town to hire kayaks and spend the day paddling on the Medina River. Meanwhile, hikers and cyclists will find plenty of trails to explore over at Hill Country State Natural Area, 20 minutes’ drive away.

There are several museums nearby that are worth a look – start at the Frontier Times Museum, a 10-minute walk away, to see a slightly eccentric collection of that’s been open to the public for more than 80 years and tells the history of ranching and cowboys in the area. A 10-minute drive out of town is the Town Mountain Miniatures Museum, where vintage toys sit alongside tiny scenes of cowboy life in miniature.

Over in San Antonio, a 45-minute drive away, there are several big family-friendly attractions. Ride the rollercoasters or zoom down the waterslides at Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, or watch the live shows and meet the animals at Sea World. The town was also once famous for its mission complexes, with many of them still open to visit. Take the Mission Trail riverside walk, visit the Alamo and learn about the history of the area’s different ethnic groups at the Institute of Texan Cultures.
