Costa Brava, here you come – and if you’re clever, you’ll nab a pitch at Camping Vall d’Or, the only campsite overlooking the sandy beach at Platja d’Aro. This family-friendly spot has been welcoming guests for more than 50 years, so they must be doing something right. So what is it that they’re doing so well? Well, for starters there’s an enthusiastic team at reception ready to help you out in any way possible, and an eco-market with breakfast goodies, foodie treats and local produce for sale (plus a delivery service right to your pitch). You can catch the rays with a glass of something chilled at one of the terrace bars – and attend themed events and DJ sessions after nightfall – or dine on tapas and seafood paella in the restaurant. There’s a games area and organised sporty stuff to keep the kids entertained, while you have a go at Zumba or Pilates on the beach. And if you feel that you need a pamper after running around in the sun, book a treatment at the massage cabin. If the spectacular beachfront setting and all those facilities are not enough to convince you about Camping Vall d’Or, you may like to know that Port d’Aro marina is five minutes’ walk away for leisurely strolls around the yachts. If you want to up the night-time tempo a bit, Ocine Platja d’Aro mall (10 minutes’ walk) has a cinema, bowling alley and nightclub.

Power optional earth campsite (XL)

Liked Overall, excellent. As described on Pitchup. Flat pitches, some shaded, some a good size. Bar & restaurant excellent. Adjacent beach with private access. Town a short flat walk. Staff helpful and English speaking.

Disliked Access difficult for a twin axle -with or without motormovers. My advice, walk the route. Remove any fence posts that impede access. Having booked a large pitch, we found a tree in it making access difficult. Opted for a smaller pitch with easier access. If I'd booked a small pitch and moved to a bigger pitch, the camp would have wanted extra money - no reciprocal arrangement when the other way round. Secondly, camp houses 100's of young students - none a problem until you need to shower! Worse for the ladies as all sinks taken by young ladies applying make up! Centralised water stand points - could be a trek depending on your pitch location.

Liked Expensive but get what you pay for location wise!
Great location perfect on the beach we was 3 pitches away from the gate to get access onto the beach which was lovely windy at times but a refreshing breeze
Very clean camp site when we arrived
Very clean toilet block showers etc
Good local shops short walk away over beach
Would go back same time again late June but would not stay any later as we left the last 2 days was unbearable to get a shower or to use a toilet
hundreds of teenagers arrived for summer camp the place got cramped and noisy and toilets shower queues became ridiculous all in all would go back but not after 1st July

There’s lots to keep active families occupied around Platja d’Aro. There are a couple of tennis clubs within 10 minutes’ walk, Skatepark Platja d’Aro (15 minutes) for skateboarders, and rope courses or zipwires at Costa Brava Parc Aventura Platja d’Aro (five minutes’ drive). Teach the kids the basics of golf at Pitch and Putt Mas Torrellas (10 minutes) or while away the afternoon on the thrill rides at Pp’s Park Platja d’Aro (15 minutes’ walk). To see a little more of the region, rent a motorboat from the marina (five minutes) to explore beaches and hidden coves up and down the Mediterranean coastline. Should you feel the need to stir from beachfront Platja d’Aro altogether, head to historic Girona (40 minutes’ drive) to explore the labyrinthine El Call quarter, walk the ramparts for views of the cathedral and spot the city's Game of Thrones locations. Alternatively, spend the day in Barcelona (an hour and 15 minutes) to watch the street theatre on Las Ramblas, graze your way around the tapas bars of La Boqueria food market and tour Antoni Gaudí’s extraordinary Sagrada Família cathedral.
