Local attractions
The landscapes and activities of Los Arribes del Duero Natural Park next to the site and in the autonomous community of Castile and León are worth the trip for themselves: birdwatching is one of the most flocked-to activities here as the park is a bird protected zone, but visitors also launch themselves at hiking, fishing and getting to the Pozo de los Humos (or Well of Smoke) waterfall, one of the most visited places in all the park.
Boat trips on the Douro river are also somewhat of a must; if you do decide to climb on board, take one towards a stop at Lamego to see its old city centre, its cathedral and the scenic sanctuary of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios on the hill of St Stephen. Just over the border into Portugal, take a boat too to the old town and green hills of Pinhão.
A short drive away from the site is the Almendra Dam, sending power to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the nearby Douro River Valley wine region from its heady height of over 200 metres.
75km from there, the city of Salamanca is a nicely cultural day trip out, with recommended sights to see the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and the San Esteban Church and Monastery.
