  • Small, eco-friendly and low-impact site in Portugal's Guarda region
  • Watersports and Serra da Estrela Natural Park within 50 minutes' drive
  • Spring-fed swimming pool on site, music tuition and organic meals
Here's a grand spot in Portugal's Guarda region: the small, low-impact and eco-friendly São Lourenço is next to the Távora river, surrounded by woods and hills and a quarter of an hour from the medieval fortress town of Trancoso. It's also close to the small town of Linhares with its pretty castle; a gliding centre; many hiking trails and the famed Serra da Estrela mountains It's all about simple comforts on site: plenty of space for you to enjoy the peace and the views: the pull of the outdoors is so strong out here the site owners have even put the bath outside so you’ll never miss a moment. The owners take great care to preserve this lush environment; same goes for the mountain spring-fed swimming pool which is kind to nature and sheer bliss on hot days. This is a spot that inspires the creative side and you can have one-to-one tuition in violin, flute and piano, as well as mathematics and fitness training. A separate section of São Lourenço offers privacy for naturist guests. Alfresco feasting on barbecues is welcome and there’s an outdoor dining area where you can order fresh organic vegetarian and egg meals.

Local attractions

The name ‘Guarda’ refers to the extraordinary number of forts and castles keeping watch over this mountain territory, so close to the ancient border with Spain. Trancoso, quarter of an hour away, is an excellent medieval example of the kind, sitting on a high plateau and full of traces of a history dating back to the Moorish invasions in the 10th-century. On a more contemporary note, it’s also your nearest point for restaurants, bars and supermarkets. To walk history of a more ancient kind, make tracks for the Parque Arqueológico do Valle do Côa (50 minutes’ drive), to see open-air rock paintings in a nature-filled river valley that’s ideal for hikes and picnics. For wilderness walks, watersports and lazing on the beach, it’s half an hour to the Vilar dam and reservoir, one of many in this region of mountains and rivers. To get high up, head for the Parque Natural de le Serra da Estrela, a natural park region containing Portugal’s highest peak and only ski resort; the mountain village of Linhares da Beira, 50 minutes away, makes a good starting-point for walking, biking, driving and hang-gliding trips around the northern part of the park.
