If you’re longing for a peaceful spot to set up camp on southern Italy’s Ionian coastline, it looks like you’re in the right place at Rodano Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from the late-night beach-party resort of Soverato in Calabria but light years away in vibe. Spacious grass pitches – set under a canopy of trees for shade – lead directly to the sea at Davoli beach, where you can choose to laze around in a hammock or head for one of the local lidos.
The facilities block is in the process of being upgraded, but currently there is plenty of hot water for showers, a family washroom and a washing-up area. You can fire up barbecues on the pitches, but if alfresco cooking is not for you, 20 minutes’ walk takes you to several beach bars and takeaway options.
If you’re travelling by public transport, the welcoming site owner will pick you up by prior arrangement. You don’t really need a car to stay here anyway; you can hire gear for watersports on the beach, go riding and hire bikes to explore inland Calabria, all within 15 minutes’ stroll.

When you’re after a bit of lively beach action, Soverato (10 minutes’ drive) offers up a selection of sandy strands sprawling along the Ionian coastline. Its seafront Lungomare is lined with ice-cream parlours and upscale bars tucked under palm trees, and really comes to life at night, when it’s busy with local families out for their ‘passeggiata’ evening stroll.
Visit by day to explore hillside Soverato Vecchia, with its ancient city walls and cathedral remains. Have a stroll around the Giardino Botanico Santicelli, a lush oasis showcasing regional Mediterranean flora, and take time to tour the Municipal Museum, which uncovers the mysteries of Calabria’s centuries of history.
Delve deep into the region’s ancient Greek and Roman origins at Monasterace Archaeological Park, where the seventh-century BCE city of Kaulon once stood. The stylishly curated Antiquarium archaeological museum (both half an hour) displays delicate mosaics, headless statuary and pottery finds from the site.
