If you’re longing for a peaceful spot to set up camp on southern Italy’s Ionian coastline, it looks like you’re in the right place at Rodano Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from the late-night beach-party resort of Soverato in Calabria but light years away in vibe. Spacious grass pitches – set under a canopy of trees for shade – lead directly to the sea at Davoli beach, where you can choose to laze around in a hammock or head for one of the local lidos. The facilities block has plenty of hot water for showers, plus a family washroom and a washing-up area. You can fire up barbecues on the pitches, but if alfresco cooking is not for you, 20 minutes’ walk takes you to several beach bars and takeaway options. If you’re travelling by public transport, the welcoming site owner will pick you up by prior arrangement. You don’t really need a car to stay here anyway; you can hire gear for watersports on the beach, go riding and hire bikes to explore inland Calabria, all within 15 minutes’ stroll.
