General

  • Family-run site set among six hectares of landscaped and wild gardens
  • Around 25 minutes from Vienne and under an hour from Lyon
  • Outdoor pool, fishing lake, miniature golf and restaurant

What a pretty place... Le Bontemps is a spectacular-looking site in the Isère department, made up of six scenic hectares of landscaped and wild gardens filled with flowers, plants and serene spots.

Over 175 rare plant species are around these pretty grounds for you to amble peacefully among, or you could seek out the zen garden, fountain, or nature areas for maximum peace and quiet. A private fishing lake is at your disposal too if you're up for angling; if not, the lake surroundings are a mighty serene spot at which to settle down (this is very much the time for a look at the site pics).

A fine big outdoor pool and roomy paddling pool take care of dips for all ages; on land, there's an outdoor gym to work out at, miniature golf to test your skill at, and tennis, badminton, volleyball and pétanque courts to whack a ball around at. Evening entertainment of all sorts runs in summer.

As a family-friendly place, kids are well catered for too, with a playground, bouncy castle and kids' club. Off site, Le Bontemps is within easy reach of Roussillon and Vienne, the Saint-Martin-la-Plaine wildlife park and the mountains of the Pilat Regional Nature Park.

The site is a couple of kilometres from the shops and restaurants of Vernioz, and about 50 minutes' drive from the foodie city of Lyon. Take some time for eats on site: the restaurant and snack bar serves up meals all day to have indoors or on the terrace, or barbecues can be fired up for dins back at your pitch.

Leafy site with nice river, but bring your own food!08/10/2018

The pool, slides and the river, our children enjoyed both as it was very hot whilst we were there. Nice leafy site with mature trees for shade. Adequate facilities, whilst not new they are regularly cleaned and there were enough that we never had to queue for a shower!
Mainly Dutch site, our children made friends with the Dutch kids and learnt a few words of Dutch whilst fishing down at the river, French not required :D

Dutch staff at reception spoke good English which was great.

    Disliked:

The inevitable 'baggsying' of sun loungers with towels in the morning by people who then left for the day leaving the loungers unusable. The pool staff hounded anyone daring to wear swimming shorts inside of the tight pants French style ones, but did nothing about the scores of unused sun loungers and teenagers throwing balls around.
Shop is not well stocked - bring food with you if you can! You can order your bread the day before which is great, and get milk, softdrinks, butter and a few canned goods from the shop but that's about it - it's basically one set of shelves. No ice or ice pack freezing facilities either so you'll need an electric cooler if camping to keep food fresh. There is a restaurant where you can order pizza etc to tide you over until you can get to a supermarket (20 mins).
You need to pay for Wifi if you want it and be aware that the phone signal is non existant. I enjoyed having to switch off for a week, but my husband who needed to do a little work found this frustrating :)

The theft - we had several things go missing, mostly kitchen equipment, staff expressed regret but did nothing.
The failure to honour the prices quoted by PitchUp. They claimed that Pitchup are using the wrong prices and so we had to pay extra. Emailed Pitchup who said they would contact the campsite to look into it but have never offered compensation or a response despite us asking for one.

Local attractions

A drive of about 25 minutes will take you to the handsome old city of Vienne, once a strategic city in Roman times. Some of the thermal baths are still around to see, as well as the Augustan temple, converted to a church in the Middle Ages, and the Roman amphitheatre, now used for the annual Vienne jazz festival running for two weeks each summer.

An excellently odd day out nearby is the Palais idéal of Ferdinand Cheval, a postman who lived in these parts in the 19th century. Picking up an unusually shaped rock one day while out on his rounds, he decided to bring it home and then seek out others of the same type, with which to construct an elaborate stone palace by the side of the road (as you do). The overall effect is really rather fab: do go see.

The Pilat Regional Nature Park about 15 minutes away to the west has 560 kilometres of marked walking trails to tackle for hikers or strollers of all abilities, over its 65,000 hectares of mountains, lakes and meadows.
