This large and lively site in France's scenic Var department would make a great base for families, friends and couples looking for somewhere to settle down near the beaches and ports of the Riviera. Set a couple of minutes' drive from the A8 motorway and eight kilometres from the nearest beach, it also has a wide range of facilities to suit a variety of tastes. There's a grand total of five indoor and outdoor swimming pools here, plus six waterslides and a jacuzzi – suffice it to say, there'll be plenty of scope for a swim. Each pool complex has a bar where you can pick up cooling drinks or snacks. For further exercise, there are site-organised youth sporting events like volleyball, tennis and basketball tournaments. Adults have their own activities depending on the season, while families looking to explore the local area independently can take advantage of bike hire opportunities at reception. Camping La Baume also scores highly for its food options: restaurants, two bars, two snack spots, a small supermarket and takeaway services are on hand whenever you fancy a break from meal prep. Other facilities like washing machines, drying and ironing facilities, a bureau de change, safety deposit boxes and a souvenir shop may also come in handy. All this is a short distance from Fréjus (10 minutes' drive), where there are Roman remains, tourist offices and a railway station.

Local attractions

Just arrived? Fréjus (10 minutes' drive) is the place to start with its plentiful beaches, food outlets and family-friendly activities: there's Aqualand Fréjus for when you're happy to get wet, Luna Park's big rides for an adrenaline kick and International Racing Karting for whooshing round at a high speed. But it's not all action-packed around here: head to the Observatoire De La Vasière birdwatching area (15 minutes) if you feel it's time to escape to an oasis of calm. Slightly further afield there are plenty of scenic South of France sights to see along the coast, from the stunning Château de la Napoule (30 minutes) and Château De Théoule (30 minutes) to Cannes' old port (35 minutes) with its yachts and watersports. Inland, set yourself in the direction of Grasse (45 minutes) to visit its impressive cathedral and to sniff out new fragrances at its famed perfume museum. Draguignan (30 minutes) is another popular option, with lots of food options plus Neolithic heritage and an artillery museum, as is the remote Abbaye du Thoronet (40 minutes) where the peace and quiet is second to none.
