Camping Le Platin-La Redoute

7.4

This park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Campsite with Atlantic Ocean views on Poitou-Charentes' Ile de Ré
  • A 10-minute drive to La Rochelle and 15 minutes to Saint-Martin-de-Ré
  • Swimming pool, activities, shop, bar and easy access to Rivedoux beach

Well, what a setting. Just over the bridge connecting the tiny Ile de Ré with mainland France, Camping Le Platin-La Redoute is a smashing Poitou-Charentes base for exploring the island, lazing on the sandy beaches or admiring Atlantic Ocean views from the pitches.

For sporty holidaymakers, activities on site include swimming laps in the heated outdoor pool or splashing around with toddlers in the paddling pool. You can take refreshing dips or try high-octane kitesurfing and jetskiing off Rivedoux beach – more sedate types might prefer paddleboarding or fishing – and rent bikes to traverse Ile de Ré, with one bike track leaving from right outside the campsite.

In high season, all sorts of fun entertainment kicks off for families, from aqua fit classes to a kids’ club and keenly fought table-tennis tournaments. Night-times are sorted too, with shows and karaoke sessions at the bar.

Pick up your day-to-day basics and fresh baguettes at the campsite shop, or if you fancy eating out, there are burger bars and crêperies within a few minutes’ walk.

Great location as you can walk to both sides. small market with amazing bakery and butcher and seafood sellers just outside the gate.
The pool, was low or no chlorine - it was great!

    Disliked:

Beaches not as dog friendly as I would have hoped in the area. The one of the north side of the camp has a before 10am and after 8pm dog policy. The opposite beach is strictly no dogs.

    Easy to find.

    Disliked:

To get to the pool you have to cross a road. It was small and far too busy.
Trees too high to offer our pitch any shade.
The nearest beach wasn't very good and the receptionist told us to go to one that's 15 mins walk away.
No shop for the children to go to for a little bit of independence.

The location and island is beautiful. Site is by a super beach and cycling was great all around the island. Lucky our pitch was right on the front facing the sea. We would definitely return to the island but on a different site. Our French neighbours were lovely a very polite.

    Disliked:

Other than a picturesque view from our pitch the site was a massive disappointment. Facilities were basic and just about clean at times. The bar was only open late evening and had different types of entertainment. Most nights extremely loud and busy. On three occasions the music went on until well after midnight. Site has a pool but it is actually on a different site across the road so not very convenient. I belive it was originally two sites now supposed to be be one. Pitches were tight and if we had one of the boulevard pitchs it would have been impossible to get out 7,5m motorhome onto one. Staff were receptive. I've been coming to France with the family for over 20 years and this is one of the worst kept site I've seen. Despartly needs a lick of paint and sort out..

Everything - we will be back.

Pool (amazing!), closeness to beach & the site itself. Ile De Re is beautiful.

    Disliked:

A need for soap dispensers in the toilets- would happily have an increased day fee to cover this.

We are relatively new to camping, but struggled to get our pegs down- as very hard ground below the top surface. We would return next time with stronger pegs- site happily lent a hammer, as mallet wasn’t enough.

Local attractions

The campsite is in pole position for discovering the many attractions on the obligingly flat Ile de Ré, whether on foot, by bike or car. Saint-Martin-de-Ré (15 minutes’ drive or 40 minutes’ cycle) is a pretty oceanside village for a potter around the marina, a walk along the once-fortified defence walls and a bite of lunch in cosy quayside auberges.

Take nature-loving kids to Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ drive) to (hopefully) spy terns and avocets on the salt marshes, climb the Phare des Baleines lighthouse (40 minutes) for views across the island, or simply take a picnic and eat it all together on the quiet beaches of La Couarde-sur-Mer (20 minutes) or La Noue (half an hour).

Family trips back to the mainland might include a day on the beaches of lively La Rochelle (10 minutes) and a wander around the city’s medieval ramparts to its famous triumvirate of watchtowers. Other kid-centric attractions in La Rochelle include the Aquarium, visits to the subterranean Bunker La Rochelle to see weapons and uniforms from World War II, or a poke around among eccentric automated models at the Musée des Automates.
