  • Campsite with Atlantic Ocean views on Poitou-Charentes' Ile de Ré
  • A 10-minute drive to La Rochelle and 15 minutes to Saint-Martin-de-Ré
  • Swimming pool, activities, shop, bar and easy access to Rivedoux beach
Well, what a setting. Just over the bridge connecting the tiny Ile de Ré with mainland France, Camping Le Platin-La Redoute is a smashing Poitou-Charentes base for exploring the island, lazing on the sandy beaches or admiring Atlantic Ocean views from the pitches. For sporty holidaymakers, activities on site include swimming laps in the heated outdoor pool or splashing around with toddlers in the paddling pool. You can take refreshing dips or try high-octane kitesurfing and jetskiing off Rivedoux beach – more sedate types might prefer paddleboarding or fishing – and rent bikes to traverse Ile de Ré, with one bike track leaving from right outside the campsite. In high season, all sorts of fun entertainment kicks off for families, from aqua fit classes to a kids’ club and keenly fought table-tennis tournaments. Night-times are sorted too, with shows and karaoke sessions at the bar. Pick up your day-to-day basics and fresh baguettes at the campsite shop, or if you fancy eating out, there are burger bars and crêperies within a few minutes’ walk.

Liked: The location was great and the pitch we had shady and had reasonable room. It was very convenient having the gates at the end of each section that was straight onto the cycle path and we really enjoyed exploring on hired electric bikes. A fabulous baker right opposite the camp which was a big bonus. Amazing cakes and pastries

Disliked: The facilities are old and tired and need updating. It would be easy to separate the men’s and womens toilets with a sign.

Liked: The supermarket opening late and was close.

Disliked: Everything. The worst campsite I’ve stayed in the full of France. Really really dated. Left a day early and went to another campsite. Please be aware the pool is across the road in another complex. The toilets are dated and don’t consist of toilet roll or soap. And tbh not much else to do for younger kids.

Local attractions

The campsite is in pole position for discovering the many attractions on the obligingly flat Ile de Ré, whether on foot, by bike or car. Saint-Martin-de-Ré (15 minutes’ drive or 40 minutes’ cycle) is a pretty oceanside village for a potter around the marina, a walk along the once-fortified defence walls and a bite of lunch in cosy quayside auberges. Take nature-loving kids to Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ drive) to (hopefully) spy terns and avocets on the salt marshes, climb the Phare des Baleines lighthouse (40 minutes) for views across the island, or simply take a picnic and eat it all together on the quiet beaches of La Couarde-sur-Mer (20 minutes) or La Noue (half an hour). Family trips back to the mainland might include a day on the beaches of lively La Rochelle (10 minutes) and a wander around the city’s medieval ramparts to its famous triumvirate of watchtowers. Other kid-centric attractions in La Rochelle include the Aquarium, visits to the subterranean Bunker La Rochelle to see weapons and uniforms from World War II, or a poke around among eccentric automated models at the Musée des Automates.
