  • Campsite with Atlantic Ocean views on Poitou-Charentes' Ile de Ré
  • A 10-minute drive to La Rochelle and 15 minutes to Saint-Martin-de-Ré
  • Swimming pool, activities, shop, bar and easy access to Rivedoux beach
Well, what a setting. Just over the bridge connecting the tiny Ile de Ré with mainland France, Camping Le Platin-La Redoute is a smashing Poitou-Charentes base for exploring the island, lazing on the sandy beaches or admiring Atlantic Ocean views from the pitches. For sporty holidaymakers, activities on site include swimming laps in the heated outdoor pool or splashing around with toddlers in the paddling pool. You can take refreshing dips or try high-octane kitesurfing and jetskiing off Rivedoux beach – more sedate types might prefer paddleboarding or fishing – and rent bikes to traverse Ile de Ré, with one bike track leaving from right outside the campsite. In high season, all sorts of fun entertainment kicks off for families, from aqua fit classes to a kids’ club and keenly fought table-tennis tournaments. Night-times are sorted too, with shows and karaoke sessions at the bar. Pick up your day-to-day basics and fresh baguettes at the campsite shop, or if you fancy eating out, there are burger bars and crêperies within a few minutes’ walk.

What customers say

Prime beach spot with cycle paths & shops. Guests rave about views & heated pool (great for families). Pitches generally good. However, dated facilities (toilets/showers) and occasional noise were noted. Some cleanliness issues and missing toilet paper/seats.

It looks like a nice site but it’s old, knackered and too cramped.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The pool even though it was a walk from our spot on coast side of road at very far end was lovely. Ideal for kids. Heated and space around to relax. Toilet block near also. Location is good just off bridge. A great view looking back towards it. Easy access to cycle routes in many directions.
Showers ok. Toilets ok, as expected no toilet roll or seats.
Showers ok.
There is an aire next door.

Disliked Very tight road at top of site so issue if two vans in opposite directions but places to turn into where touring plots are. We were at far end near a mini fair area out of the site and bar but on a plus near a fab boulangerie and market access.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Being so close to the beach and the handy gates.

Disliked The price!!!
Well over priced campsite, came out at 52€ for 1 night for a pitch with no electric and then you have to pay 16 to pay the toll to get over on the bridge, which is no fault of theirs I know but still it adds up. The swimming pool is over a main road and not nearly enough sunbeds. The toilet blocks are severely outdated. And is no clear instructions which is for drinking water? The place itself is gorgeous but overall. Very over priced. The staff in the reception I found quite rude, talking in French between themselves and laughing and I don't speak much French so didn't understand very much.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The location was good but nothing else!

Disliked Pitches were so crammed and very busy. Toilets and showers were dirty and needed deep cleaning! Unisex showers which are not for everyone and limited amount of toilets for the amount of guests on the camp! The excuse for not providing toilet roll or hand soap is a ‘French thing’ is complete rubbish and so unhygienic that could cause all sorts of breakouts! Would not recommend this site and there are others on the island that look far better. Staff clueless in hospitality.. loud music late at night from site bar and nearby.

Local attractions

The campsite is in pole position for discovering the many attractions on the obligingly flat Ile de Ré, whether on foot, by bike or car. Saint-Martin-de-Ré (15 minutes’ drive or 40 minutes’ cycle) is a pretty oceanside village for a potter around the marina, a walk along the once-fortified defence walls and a bite of lunch in cosy quayside auberges. Take nature-loving kids to Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve (45 minutes’ drive) to (hopefully) spy terns and avocets on the salt marshes, climb the Phare des Baleines lighthouse (40 minutes) for views across the island, or simply take a picnic and eat it all together on the quiet beaches of La Couarde-sur-Mer (20 minutes) or La Noue (half an hour). Family trips back to the mainland might include a day on the beaches of lively La Rochelle (10 minutes) and a wander around the city’s medieval ramparts to its famous triumvirate of watchtowers. Other kid-centric attractions in La Rochelle include the Aquarium, visits to the subterranean Bunker La Rochelle to see weapons and uniforms from World War II, or a poke around among eccentric automated models at the Musée des Automates.
