Camping Bonne Anse Plage

This site has direct access to coastal footpaths, so refreshing walks along the Atlantic are easy to sort. If you want to feel like you've reached the end of the world, make your way over to historic La Coubre lighthouse (30 minutes' walk) and soak up the endless ocean vistas… For a smart and sophisticated coastal resort, check out the covered market, cathedral and beaches at Royan (30 minutes' drive). If you're tempted by the prospect of an offshore jaunt, head north towards the D26 road bridge and cross over to the gorgeous Île d'Oléron (30 minutes). This splendidly scenic isle has its own microclimate, making it popular with both people (who flock to its sandy beaches) and exotic plants (which thrive in the soil at La Boirie gardens). This part of southern France is also a prime spot for inland explores: head to Saintes (45 minutes) for Roman and medieval architecture or to Cognac (an hour and 15 minutes) to visit the home of the brandy of the same name (check out Martell's distillery in the city centre for a chance to sample the wares).
