  • Family-friendly spot by the river Hem, a half-hour drive from Calais
  • Surrounded by the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park
  • Dogs welcome; playground, restaurant, games room and activities
A half-hour’s drive from Calais, Camping L’Orée des Caps is a top location for a family holiday in northern France, or for an easy stopover. This family-friendly site in the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park puts you within easy driving distance of sandy beaches and relaxed coastal walks. You'll also be well placed for history-rich hikes along the GR145/Via Francigena path, a pilgrims' route that links Canterbury to Rome and passes only a few hundred metres from the site, or trips to the heritage attractions of Saint-Omer (half an hour's drive). The level grass pitches at this site are well maintained and surrounded by tall hedges for privacy. There's plenty of scope to be sociable when you feel like it though, thanks to a range of organised activities – from karaoke sessions and sociable dinners to fitness sessions and pétanque tournaments. There’s also a lawn with a volleyball net, a games room with table football, and an outdoor play area with climbing structures and a basketball hoop. Dogs are welcome at this site, and you should find plenty of dog-friendly walks along the banks of the river Hem, which borders the property. The on-site restaurant serves classic French dishes like croques monsieurs and crêpes, as well as pizzas, though the house speciality is an aperitif board that almost groans under the weight of assorted cheeses, cold cuts and gherkins. If you’d rather make your own food, you should be able to buy all you need in the town of Licques (five minutes), which also has a couple of bakeries and restaurants.

What customers say

Friendly owners, great bar, and beautiful country setting ideal for stopovers. Some note minor improvements needed, but toilet/shower facilities require renovation (hot water, lighting, cleanliness issues). Pitches can be small.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Close to Calais port
Lovely bar and play area- bar open from 6-8 on an evening- could maybe extended during the summer?
Very nice host who was really helpful
Supermarket nearby- less than a couple of miles which was well stocked. - carrefour contact

Disliked Pitches were a little small especially for our twin axle caravan but we managed. And the owner is improving the pitches to accommodate larger vans.
10mins free for WiFi then there was a charge

From the manager: Thanks you Amanda,

We are the new campsite owner ( since one year ) and we improve the campsite ( my english nedds to be improved too )
it will be ever better next year

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The friendliness of the owners and other guests.
So accommodating and a great bar area with great food, which was much needed after a long day travelling and quite a late arrival.
Choosing my pitch was great, and as the site is relatively small, everything is close by.
Good English spoken by the owners was again a massive bonus after a long day and you are very tired and finding it difficult to think!

Disliked Maybe mention at check in that you need to have your own toilet paper. Their is some signage and maybe it was me, but I didn't see it until the morning and reception wasn't open.....fortunately a fellow guest had left some in the toilet and shower block.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Nice owners who are trying to build up and modernise business.

Disliked No running hot water (very cold shower) and also only a few pitches for tents.
Restaurant only open 18:00 - 20:00hrs.
No toilet tissue in toilets, also no soap or drying facilities for washing after using toilet

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Ronnie,

Power optional grass campsite

Liked A 30 minute drive to the port of Calais.

Disliked Felt the bar food and drinks were a little overpriced.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We are aware of the prices, but we want to offer quality products, either local or regional. €6 for a croque-monsieur with salad, €13 for a pizza, €5.60 for a Belgian beer, and €3.50 for a Coca-Cola in a glass bottle.
Have a lovely day.

Liked The camping was quite and the pizza was good

Disliked The toilets and showers were really gross. 2 toilets for a whole camping, not cleaned, the guys toilets outside were broken, you peed in it and it fell down through the toilet on your legs. Disgusting

The people were not friendly when you arrive 20 minutes early. They tell you that there is no respect.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello,
We have not had a urinal for the past few weeks. There are 4 toilets and 5 showers for 18 pitches, which is above the standard and quite comfortable. The block is cleaned 2 to 3 times a day. We do allow early arrivals when possible, but there is no need to ring several times within 5 minutes—please give us time to get there, especially during closing hours.

We wish you a plaisant holliday
Thank you for the pizza

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Unfortunately we did not enjoy this site.

Disliked The site was tiny & it is nothing like what the picture looked like.

The staff were friendly but spoke very poor English & told us to “find a pitch.” Two pitches left which were tucked in a corner and a nightmare trying to reverse our twin axle tourer into the tight pitch.

The toilets / showers were not clean. The urinal odour was very strong.

The site was not maintained.

Although it served a purpose for our one night stay / stop over, we wouldn’t return.
