  • Family-friendly spot by the river Hem, a half-hour drive from Calais
  • Surrounded by the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park
  • Dogs welcome; playground, restaurant, games room and activities
Half an hour's drive from Calais, Camping L’Orée des Caps is a top location for a family holiday in northern France, or for an easy stopover. This quiet, friendly and family-oriented site is in the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park, 25 to 30 minutes' drive from beaches, and has modern amenities and a snack bar. You'll also be well placed for history-rich hikes along the GR145/Via Francigena path, a pilgrims' route that links Canterbury to Rome and passes only a few hundred metres from the site – it's one of multiple hiking trails that you can begin directly from the site – or trips to the heritage attractions of Saint-Omer (half an hour's drive). The level grass pitches at this site are well-maintained and surrounded by tall hedges for privacy. There's plenty of scope to be sociable when you feel like it, though, with a range of organised activities taking place on site from karaoke sessions and sociable dinners to fitness sessions and pétanque tournaments. There’s also a lawn with a volleyball net, a games room with table football, and an outdoor play area with climbing structures and a basketball hoop. Dogs are welcome at this site, and you should find plenty of dog-friendly walks along the banks of the river Hem, which borders the property. The on-site snack bar serves classic French dishes like croques monsieurs and crêpes, as well as pizzas, though the house speciality is an aperitif board that almost groans under the weight of assorted cheeses, cold cuts and gherkins. If you’d rather make your own food, you should be able to buy all you need in the town of Licques (five minutes), which also has a couple of bakeries and restaurants.

What customers say

Friendly, well-run campsite near Calais, great value. Praised for helpful owners, private hedged sites, and clean, though dated, facilities. Ongoing improvements include updated bathrooms. Wi-Fi and snack bar available. Minor issues reported and fixed.

Liked Lovely site; clean, well appointed, super friendly owners with free entertainment on our Sunday night stay. Food was good and site very reasonably priced with water, grey waste, showers, sinks, toilets and washing machines although we didn’t use them.
Absolutely perfect for a stopover before using tunnel home

Disliked Nothing to dislike!

Liked Super friendly, owner went above and beyond. Very helpful & informative. Very relaxed atmosphere. Thank you for having us. Highly recommend. The only thing was the showers could maybe be a little warmer and it would be good to have an on site shop. Would definitely come back again. Very well priced too!

Liked Great for location to Calais. Showers and toilets clean

Disliked Not many amenities close by. Nowhere to get food when we arrived. Campsite next door had a lovely restaurant but wouldn’t let us eat there despite not being full. Maybe it would’ve been a better option to stay there. Also many people live on the site.

Liked Loved how close to Calais it was without being too noisy or busy. 35 min drive to Calais was a breeze!

Loved free WiFi, was actually decent WiFi too.

Loved how friendly the manager was!

For around £10 a night there is absolutely nothing I can grumble or complain about.

Just take your own toilet paper and hand soap.

Disliked Nothing !

From the manager: Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are committed to welcoming our guests in the best possible way. We have chosen to provide high-quality Wi-Fi free of charge throughout the campsite, as we know how important it can be, especially given the cost of some mobile data plans when travelling abroad.

Thank you as well for your recommendations about our future trip to Scotland. We will definitely keep them in mind!

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Best regards,

Aurélie and Fred
