Camping Le Moulin de Bidounet: Grass pitches

General

  • Family-friendly site on a five-hectare island in the Tarn river
  • Next to a riverside bike path; a 15-minute walk from Moissac centre
  • Swimming pool, kids' pool, playground, food truck, summer activities

The peaceful vibe of an island escape, the convenience of being a 15-minute stroll from town – what a splendid setting has Camping Le Moulin de Bidounet. This fab Midi-Pyrenees mix is just outside the little town of Moissac and, yes indeed, on its own island in the Tarn river.

The current owners aren't the first to spot the excellent potential of this location – that credit goes to the folk who first set up a water mill here way back in 1859. The old mill building now functions as the site’s reception, so you can get a sense of the history of the place as soon as you set foot in the place... and if you like that, you’ll most likely love the rest of what Moissac has to offer, including a thousand year old abbey and a handsome art deco district.

The setting may have history but the facilities here are very much of the here and now, including a swimming pool, kids’ pool, playground and pétanque court, along with a games room and a TV room for those days when you need to shelter from the weather. Extra games, crafts and other antics are laid on for the nippers in summer too.

If you do fancy spending a bit of time on the activities of our ancestors, head to the riverbank for a bit of fishing or strike up a fire at the barbecue area; if you don’t, source your dinner the 21st-century way by stopping at the food truck and snaffling a beer from the bar.

Shower and toilet facilities were always very clean, closely located to lodges/tents and never too busy.

We found it extremely convenient to be able to park the car directly next to the tent throughout our stay, rather than walking to a separate car park area (as we have always had to do at other campsites).

Facilities in the tent were very good; the fridge and freezer compartment had good capacity, and the cooker had two hobs so we were able to cook for our family of five without difficulty.

The seating area outside was a perfect size and was sheltered, so even if it rained (it didn't whilst we were there) the family could still eat outside.

We found the daily announcements to guests useful for information about local events, markets, food deliveries to the campsite etc.

The lake view was beautiful, particularly at sunrise - lovely to see whilst enjoying breakfast.

    Disliked:

On a couple of evenings, the noise from across the lake from a nearby bar was very noticeable even late into the night. There was sometimes also quite loud noise from motorbikes riding along the other side of the lake at odd hours, which in addition to the water-skiing each afternoon on the lake.

Every other campsite we have stayed at in France over the last seven years has been much noisier than at Camping Le Mouline de Budounet, and when camping you must expect some noise, so we were still very happy with the campsite and would certainly book here again.

When booking, it was not clear that we needed to pay an additional cost on arrival to access the Wi-Fi and that we had to pay for each family member to use it. This was disappointing because for our family of five, all with devices, it was quite expensive for the whole family to use Wi-Fi for the entire week of our stay. We had not budgeted for that and it was not clear from the website that Wi-Fi was not included in the booking price. This would not necessarily have dissuaded us from booking but it would have been more helpful to have this added as a separate itemised cost at the time of booking so that we were aware before arrival.

Local attractions

Good news for folk who fancy a break from driving: you can fill plenty of time hereabouts without getting in the car. For starters, you can hire bike on site to pedal your way along the Canal des Deux Mers voie verte bike path 500 metres away or join a guided bike tour through the region’s fruit orchards in summer.

Yearning to get out on the Tarn? Watery escapades are a cinch too – hire small boats, canoes and paddleboards in town, take a week-long rowing course or try your hand at water-skiing (or just board a small cruise boat if that all sounds a bit exhausting).

You’ll want to spend some time moseying around Moissac too, of course – don’t miss the UNESCO-listed 12th-century abbey and a saunter through the stylish Art Deco area. If you think you can manage a drive on the odd day or two, make tracks for the toy museum and old bridge in Montauban (half an hour) or head to Toulouse (an hour) for museums, gardens and snacking on the city’s famed sausages.
