  • Lot department site near Gourdon and Sarlat
  • Under an hour from Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac
  • Fishing, pool, beach football, free wifi, snack bar and food shop
This is, simply, a spectacular part of France. Camping Domaine Le Quercy's setting in the Lot is a mere few kilometres from the famed and fab medieval towns of Gourdon and Sarlat, less than an hour's drive from the French must-sees of the Gouffre de Padirac and the craggy clifftop village of Rocamadour (serieusement, you'll want to see the lot). No chance of le boredom around base either, as Le Quercy is set in a spot with a lake adjacent for fishing and many walking and cycling routes nearby (bikes can be hired from the Le Quercy team). On site there's a pool with waterslides, an area for beach football and courts for basketball and badminton. Many free activities are arranged by the friendly team in high season; horse riding can be arranged for kids for an extra charge. Le Quercy also has a food shop and a snack bar with terrace. Amenities include showers and toilets (including cute wash facilities just for the kids), a drying room and a launderette.

Liked: peaceful yet exciting and absolutely gorgeous, we loved the lake and the pool, kids loved the slide and the fact you could order fresh croissants in the morning and the great showers.

Disliked: It would have been good to have a collective grill rather than have to rent one at 20 euros

Liked: This site is perfect for exploring the Dordogne’s winding river villages. The pitches are very spacious and scattered among wooded areas. The shower/loo block is very clean and plentiful hot water. The pool is brilliant - the water in the upper pool was the perfect temperature and the slides going into the lower, slightly cooler, pool were great fun.

We arrived a few days before high season began so the on-site shop and restaurant weren’t open, but we stayed longer and when the restaurant opened, the food was freshly cooked and the service excellent.

We would definitely return, not only for the site itself but also because of the friendly and helpful people who own or run it. Thank you to Gwen, Claud and Pascal and the whole team.

Disliked: Would have appreciated soap dispensers for the sinks.

Local attractions

Four fably definite must-sees are within easy reach of Le Quercy: the towns of Gourdon and Sarlat, the cliffside village of Rocamadour, and the chasm and underground river of the Gouffre de Padirac. Churches, châteaux, old towns and outdoor activities are easily found around the Lot, the Périgord region and the Dordogne too. Spectacular Rocamadour in the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park is one of the most visited attractions in France, partly for its setting (on the edge of a cliff, with the Alzou river below), and partly for the fab views from its castle, of more old villages and the gorges far below. The ancient churches of the village, such as the Basilique Saint - Sauveur  and the Chapelle Notre-Dame, are top Rocamadour religious stops. At Gourdon, start at the top of the town for more viewsome vistas of the region below; at Sarlat, take a day to see its sights, including the medieval cathedral, Benedictine abbey and more views from the bell tower. Nearby Figeac and its 13th-century Hotel de la Monnaie are also well worth a look (with yet another tiptop viewpoint from the Colline de Puy), or you could take a trip to Cardaillax, home of the vast Musée Eclaté showing life in rural France throughout the ages. And then there's the Gouffre de Padirac… a chasm of almost 100 metres leading down to an underground river and lakes, pools and stalactites. It's the most visited cave system in all of France: descend below the earth to find out why.
