General

  • Large family-friendly site 10 minutes' drive from Bogny-sur-Meuse
  • Next to a voie verte trail for walks and bike rides
  • Direct access to the Semois river for fishing and canoe trips

Ah, the Ardennes – an area with oodles to offer for folks of all travelling tastes. Snaffle a stay at Camping d'Haulmé and you’ll be within easy reach of this scenic area’s many outdoorsy activities, history-tinged wanderings and places to sample local foodie (and beery) delights.

The immediate surrounds of this eight-hectare site are decidedly rural, with a forest on one side and the banks of the Semois river on the other. Canoes and kayaks can be hired on site for folks with a penchant for paddling, and a voie verte trail passes very close by for those who’d prefer to stick to dry land and explore on foot, by bike or on horseback.

It’s not far removed from urban amenities, however – the little village of Haulmé is a kilometre away, and a leisurely 10-minute drive gets you to the supermarket, shops and restaurants of bigger Bogny-sur-Meuse.

Both options seem a little too far to stray in search of food? No matter – the site’s restaurant is open throughout the year for easy eats, and its bar area is equally welcoming for those who find themselves in need of a cold beer.

If it’s not quite beer time yet, there’s still the chance to cool off on a warm day with a dip in the outdoor pool. A pedal kart track and plenty of playground kit are also on hand for those with energetic enfants to entertain.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 05/01 and 08/31 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Hired accommodation : electricity is metered on site at €0.20 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

Amazing location. Peaceful. Close to many small towns and villages. Next to river.

We stayed in one of the chalets. These were essentially great, although ours had no kettle, washing bowl, plug and a slow electric hob! But these didn't detract from the stay. It's a huge site with lots of spaces. When we were there it was about half full.

Very few English here. Reception staff only speak French. Fair enough, it is France!

    Disliked:

The play area near the entrance, while safe, needs some TLC.

Next to river kayaks available to hire
    Bike hire available
Toilets clean with plenty of hot water
Sinks to wash your pots if in a tent

    Disliked:

Toilets not clearly marked male and female
Men were using female toilets which worried my kids as I have girls
It was more the French that could not understand the difference

Pleasant setting, large pitch, not too busy. Really liked the foot/cycle path nearby - nice walk along the river.

    Disliked:

Very noisy on two out of our three nights. On one night a group of men were up talking and singing right through until dawn. On another a children’s party went on until 1am.

The site was in the most amazing location fantastic for walks and bicycle rides. The countryside is breathtakingly magnificent!
Despite school holidays there were many pitches free and we had no near neighbours for both nights of our stay.
The families and children who were there clearly were having a fantastic time, there are great facilities for children

    Disliked:

Beautiful spot on the semois. Huge pitches and you could choose your own spot, we needed tree cover as it was 38 degrees.

    Disliked:

Oh dear. It is run down, it doesn’t seem loved at all. Some of the stand pipes didn’t work so you had to walk a long way for water, the electric hook ups were filthy, along with the night lighting . The toilets and showers are shared. I’m not keen on coming out of the toilet to face a bare backside at a urinal! They were also pretty dirty and run down, some campers behaviour was shocking. Faeces on the floor and trod all over the place, dirty nappies dumped next to the bin. The motorhome service point was falling apart and absolutely filthy. And the worst of it all was an obvious lack of rules or enforcement of them. We had a chalet opposite us where 9 grown men checked in around 4pm. They started drinking, shouting, laughing and singing and they carried that on until morning. It was 26 degrees at night in a heatwave, so we had windows open and they kept us up all night. It seems that some families have permanent pitches and behave in such disrespectful ways. Shouting, spitting and keeping oil drum fires going through the night. Our motorhome was full of their smoke. It was a dreadful place, it felt feral and unsafe. The barrier was broken at the entrance so there was no security!

Local attractions

Raring to get active? Get your boots on and stretch your legs on the voie verte trail that runs past the site. You can ride bikes along the same trail too, pedalling all the way to Belgium should you wish (only an hour away, and worth it for the multi-country bragging rights). To see the surrounds from a greater height and speed, the ziplines and bungee jumps at Terraltitude adventure park, half an hour away, might be more your style.

Feet back on solid ground, consider taking in a bit of history with visits to the Château-Fort de Sedan (50 minutes’ drive and the largest of its kind in Europe) and the Roman settlement at Vireux-Molhain (35 minutes). 20th-century goings-on are detailed at the World War II-themed Musée de la Bataille Mai-Juin 40 (an hour’s drive).

It’s worth shuttling off to Charleville-Mézières (half an hour) if you’re into your art and artefacts: the Arthur Rimbaud Museum and Musée de l’Ardenne are both crammed with bits to peruse. Follow up by popping over to Le Grand Marionnettiste monumental clock, where 12 different scenes play out on the hour across the day; if you can’t spare time for them all, schedule a Saturday evening visit to see them all in one go.
