Aerial view of the site

General

  • Seafront Normandy site in the dunes of Vanlée harbour
  • Direct access to the beach; shops and restaurants a walk away
  • Outdoor pool, playground and summertime activities on site

The dunes of Vanlée harbour on one side, direct access to Saint-Martin-de-Bréhal’s splendid stretch of sandy beach on the other – it’s safe to say that those seeking sea views will be pretty happy with their lot at Camping de la Vanlée.

Actually, the outlook from this Lower Normandy site will very much depend on the hour: at low tide you’ll be looking out at salt marshes and grazing sheep; at high tide the waters rise to put you on a peninsula. Walks, bike rides and horse rides are all fab ways to get out and see more, and there’s plenty more activity to be had within walking distance, including golf, tennis, sand yachting, sea kayaking and sailing lessons.

If les enfants should demand rather more activity than just gazing out to sea, escort them to the site’s outdoor swimming pool, direct them to the playground or help them line up games of volleyball, table tennis and pétanque. They’ll also have a summer hols programme of assorted antics to get stuck in to, as will grownups seeking sports and social events (although you’re equally welcome simply to chill out in the bar instead should you wish).

Shops and seafront restaurants are around 20 minutes’ walk away from Camping de la Vanlée, and further facilities are 10 minutes’ drive away in Bréhal.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 07/01 and 08/31 (subject to weather conditions).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Nice site good location for stop over from ferry heading south. Wonderful beach meters away, lay in bed listening to the waves. At low tide there is a massive oyster and muscle farm as far as the eye could see with 10 plus tractors farming it. 100 plus locals digging for an hour for them too. Nice heated outdoor pool too. 15 min walk down the beach to the village. We will be stopping here on our next tour south.

    Disliked:

Randomness of the pitches but we got lucky with a shaded corner plot where the neighbour's wernt at home. Low score on wifi as we didn't use it, not even sure they have it??

The campsite was laid back and friendly, and right next to the beach. There seemed to be mostly young French families at the site. A part from the people at reception there wasn't a lot of English spoken, but that wasn't an issue. Staff at the bar/restaurant were really friendly, I went there most evenings for a pint. There is a small village with a few restaurants, a bakery, butcher and vege shop about 10-15 min walk away which is handy. The toilets and showers were clean and the site wasn't overly noisy.

    Disliked:

There was a lack of trees/shade available on site. Personally I prefer keeping out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, this is probably not an issue for a lot of people.

Security not good as some things stolen from pitch at night. Needed to lock everything up in the evening which have never had to do anywhere else. Not a huge response from reception when informed

Great summer camping site.08/18/2019

Great beach location with decent amenities and a short walk from the village centre with a multitude of bars and reataurants. The local burger place is apparently great. Recommended to me by a frequent visitor. Just make sure you book otherwise you won't get in on a Friday or Saturday night. Got to be good if it's rammed with locals.
Arrive at the camp site late after all local shops etc are shut? No problem, there are a number of 24 hour Pizza vending machines that take contact less card payment and produce your Pizza in 3 minutes. Unbelievable. Absolute life saver when making the almost 300 mile dash from Calais to the Camp site with 3 hungry kids.
Friendly and helpful staff in the reception and shop. Spacious pitches in the 'golf course' section although on an incline and quite sandy. Check the weather before hand as mid August was particularly wet and windy. Take some wooden stakes and a mallet to hold your tent down.
Raptor Park is local to take the kids to on a rainy day with loads to keep them occupied. Within an hours drive of Utah and Omaha beaches. Sword, Gold and Juno are slightly further afield.
Get down to the beach at low tide and collect yourself a shed load of fresh clams, muscles and oysters etc. Cook them up in a bit of garlic, chilli and butter and apparently they're great. Again, keeps the kids occupied.
Try out a load of the French fizzy. Outrageously cheap and decent at 1 Euro 50 per bottle. Don't believe me, check out the reviews on Vivino.

    Disliked:

Scruffy looking dude that works in the bar/restaurant appears to have a dislike for British. On the multitude of times I spoke to the guy in his own language, he spoke to me as if I'd just stolen his wife and drowned his kids. Maybe I should blame Brexit? Obnoxious, unless of course, you are French. Not a great attribute considering the location and popularity with the Brits touring Normandy to view historic sites in which their grand parents and relatives fought and died to retake and defend the country.

Local attractions

If those gorgeous views have enticed you out into the open air (as well they should), there are plenty of options for outdoor time nearby. A golf course, watersports and sailing school are within a 10-minute walk, and there’s a little network of paths running around the peninsula for easy-going walks and bike rides. Plus, of course, there is that splendid beach, right next to the site and stretching south for several kilometres.

A leisurely drive of 10 minutes or so should get you to a riding stables or parachuting centre to see the scenery from either a slightly elevated position or way up in the clouds. If you’re not feeling intrepid enough to fling yourself from a plane, get a taste of life in the air on the adventure trails at Raptor Park, 10 minutes away. There’s also a roller rink, trampoline park and dino-themed play centre here.

For real-life animals, pile in the car for the 25-minute journey to see sea beasties at Roc Aquarium or exotic creatures at Champrépus Zoo (half an hour). Those folks with an eye for fashion may alternatively like to don their finery and sashay through the salons of the Christian Dior museum, 20 minutes away in Granville.
