At the edge of a river near the Pyrenees, within easy reach of Bious-Artigues lake, and with long lengths of walking and cycling trails snaking around its Pyrénées-Atlantiques countryside – oui, Camping Le Saillet is an outdoorsy kind of site.

If you do want to kick back around base, Camping Le Saillet has a pool, playground, deckchairs and regular creative activities such as pottery. There's also a snack bar with covered terrace and grassed seating, dishing up regional specialties, cold drinks and regular live music.

Among the modern and comfy amenities are shower and toilet block suitable for disabled guests, a launderette and a washing-up area.

Shops, bars and restaurants are in the local village, five minutes' walk away.

We have stayed in the Pyrenees before, but not with our caravan as we usually visit in the winter. This is a lovely riverside site, good sized pitches with hedges between and well kept. Owners are very friendly and made every effort to ensure we had a great stay here. The facilities are very good, although in high season there might be a queue for the showers as there are only three, but that isn't a huge issue. The snack bar is good, and the pool although quite small provided welcome respite from the very hot temperatures we had during our stay. There were a couple of massive thunderstorms while we were there, with torrential rain which caused flash floods and power cuts - but the owners were out on site even although it was late at night, making sure everyone was ok, especially the people in tents. We will definitely be back!

Lovely setting, very nice couple who manage the site and were very friendly, had a lovely big pitch overlooking the river

    Disliked:

Only concern would be when the site is full there are only three showers in each of both men’s and women’s block so would imagine it could be a bit of a problem but was quiet when we stayed so not an issue

The family who ran the site were very nice.
The site is right next to the river which was very high and raging at this time of year which we enjoyed watching.
There is a huge football pitch which is municipal but we could use it too.
The view of the mountains was lovely from our pitch.
The village is very small but has some really interesting history and a great church.
Great location to visit Lourdes daily.it took about ten mins in the car.

    Disliked:

The shower and wash areas where a solid structure but had a canopy roof so the breeze blew through and so did all the insects.

If you go to the Lourdes procession in the evening be mindful that the camp gates shut at ten so you have to leave your car in the car park outside of the site on your return. We fell foul of this and as the owners do not live on site we had to leave the car which we were abit anxious about as it is a remote area and if we lost the car whilst touring we would be snookered.

Local attractions

Several walking routes start nearby from Camping Le Saillet, including scenic ones along the river and one up to the sanctuary of Lourdes's Bétharram caves, the series of caverns near Asson, Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre and the site's local commune of Lestelle-Bétharram. A walk of almost three kilometres underground covers the levels dug into the mountain by the flowing river.

Another excellent local option is Pau, the Pyrenees city with spectacular and famed views across the mountains. Also in town are the medieval monument of the Château de Pau, housing a national museum that's one of the most visited in France; Beaumont Park, a top picnic spot shaded by centenarian trees; the fine arts museum, with works from the fifteenth to twentieth centuries including by Rubens and Degas; the hillside  Pavillon des Arts exhibition space, and several festivals running throughout the year.

Nearby Lourdes is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world and the most visited site in France after Paris. Across the bridge from the town centre and surrounded by extensive gardens is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, with churches, chapels and crypts including the huge and mostly underground Basilica of St Pius X, able to accommodate up to 25,000 people.
