General

  • Direct access to a sandy Atlantic beach
  • On 12 hectares of the Gironde estuary, among pine trees
  • Waterpark, slides, Jacuzzis, excursions, restaurant and on-site bakery

Get thee packed, says the team at Camping Sandaya Soulac Plage in the Gironde department, for the Atlantic Ocean is calling you. There's direct access to a sandy beach from here, along with a pristine placement on the Gironde estuary in a land of surf, pine forest and châteaux vineyards.

Surf and skateboard schools, parachuting and microlighting, horse riding and jetskiing are all within 20 minutes' drive. Royan is under an hour by car and ferry on the other side of the estuary, Grayan-et-l'Hopital is within 15 minutes, and Montalivet – and spectacular 12-kilometre beach – is 20 minutes' drive south.

Your local beach is accessible without even leaving the site, 200 metres from another sandy stretch that's often lifeguarded. At your seaside base, there's a fab 550m² waterpark for more French watery times, with pools both indoor and out, waterslides, Jacuzzis and lots of sunbathing space. A hockey field, ping pong and a sports court are around to keep you active in between, or you can join in with the many activities and excursions arranged on site in July and August (while the kids are at their summer club, but of course).

Camping Soulac Plage is on 12 hectares, in the shade of pine trees. Free communal barbecues are dotted around park to sort hunger pangs; there's a restaurant with terrace for hassle-free eats, and the grocery shop and bakery sells a tiptop selection of foodie bits and pieces, including bread and pastries made on site several times throughout the day.

As experience tent campers I would say avoid the site. 08/11/2018

Beaches close by, setting of the campsite.

    Disliked:

    - tents/caravans/ motorhomes all crammed in. We ended up pitching on a waste piece of land after our original pitch was unsuitable for out pitching a tent due to the rocky surface of the pitch.
    - pitches largely uneven and some incredibly close to the road.
    - Electric hook up was dangerous. Extra points had been added to the original, somewhat overloaded already, electric point. Electric therefore cut out often so we had to contact reception everytime so the maintenance man could open the fuse box and flick a switch.
    - contacting the site to make a payment was impossible. Emails were sent with little response and incorrect payments being demanded. We actually ended up over paying so we got some money back on arrival - though only when I pointed it out.
    - The company didn't really seem bothered about looking after it's guests. We heard all manner of complaints about pitches and mobile homes while at the front desk.
    - Hired a fridge. Turned up in an filthy condition and kept cutting out.
    -dated washing and toilet facilities

    Beach

    Disliked:

Boiling hot Shower with no warm dial just boiling hot or freezing cold, how rude other families were, the smell of the caravan sewage in the toilets as they use the same pipes, only one drain in the entire shower block, 4 showers only!, sand pitches which is absolutely ridiculous for tents!, way to many tents on top of each other it was more like a refugee camp. The 'one way' system around the camp site was ridiculous with no markings. All in all we won't be going back. The staff were very polite but that's it. For any camping families who camp alot like we do I wouldn't recommend this camp site. Go to Horton lake down the road instead it's beautiful.

    The weather

    Disliked:

Was given a map to find our own pitch - huge site - went back twice to seek help to find it - not escorted to pitch - when we did eventually find it static cabin cars parked on it so we had to go back again to get another pitch. Municipal sites were far superior and we were escorted to our pitch. We stayed at a Yello site prior to this and the contrast was stark, Yello had really clean wash laundry and shower areas, plenty of bins with regular collections. Quality restaurant and entertainment- Soulac no comparison, the worst site we visited out if seven on our tour.
Not advised where to fill water or dump grey water
    Outdoor shower not working
Direct access to beach meant wading waist high in low tide to cross to beach - no direct safe access unless you leave site and walk half a mile
No bins around site just at main entrance hence lots of dog poo
    Rusty worn out sinks
Does not cater or support motorhomes geared for residential
Pipes on pitch from previous static - dangerous hazard
No taxi or bus service available

schöner Platz unter Pinien, ruhig (Teilbereich ehemaliger Platz L´Ocean), Nähe zum Strand, Ortsteil L´Amelie mit netten Restaurants

    Disliked:

Sanitäranlagen zwar prinzipiell okay, aber oft überlastet und unsauber. Aufgrund der Größe keine familiäre Athmosphäre. Hoher Preis. Teilweise recht eng für große Gespanne und Womos.

Local attractions

Camping Soulac Plage is on the Côte d'Argent coastline, a couple of hundred metres from the seaside town of Soulac-sur-Mer. Your nearest beach is even closer, for lengthy days of surfing, swimming, sunbathing and foraging for crabs and shells at low tide.

Another excellent option is the chunk of Gironde estuary is the swish and popular seaside resort of Arcachon, with several kilometres of more Atlantic beaches. The town's particularly famed for its hundreds of posh 19th-century villas and the lush Parc Mauresque. in the Ville d'Hiver or winter town.

This is a tiptop region for wine too, on the Bordeaux, Bergeracois, Marmandais or Sauternes routes. There are 15 wineries on these in all, including several that are free to visit: make for Listrac-Médoc, Pauillac and Margaux to hunt some down.
