Get thee packed, says the team at Camping Sandaya Soulac Plage in the Gironde department, for the Atlantic Ocean is calling you. There's direct access to a sandy beach from here, along with a pristine placement on the Gironde estuary in a land of surf, pine forest and châteaux vineyards.
Surf and skateboard schools, parachuting and microlighting, horse riding and jetskiing are all within 20 minutes' drive. Royan is under an hour by car and ferry on the other side of the estuary, Grayan-et-l'Hopital is within 15 minutes, and Montalivet – and spectacular 12-kilometre beach – is 20 minutes' drive south.
Your local beach is accessible without even leaving the site, 200 metres from another sandy stretch that's often lifeguarded. At your seaside base, there's a fab 550m² waterpark for more French watery times, with pools both indoor and out, waterslides, Jacuzzis and lots of sunbathing space. A hockey field, ping pong and a sports court are around to keep you active in between, or you can join in with the many activities and excursions arranged on site in July and August (while the kids are at their summer club, but of course).
Camping Soulac Plage is on 12 hectares, in the shade of pine trees. Free communal barbecues are dotted around park to sort hunger pangs; there's a restaurant with terrace for hassle-free eats, and the grocery shop and bakery sells a tiptop selection of foodie bits and pieces, including bread and pastries made on site several times throughout the day.

Camping Soulac Plage is on the Côte d'Argent coastline, a couple of hundred metres from the seaside town of Soulac-sur-Mer. Your nearest beach is even closer, for lengthy days of surfing, swimming, sunbathing and foraging for crabs and shells at low tide.
Another excellent option is the chunk of Gironde estuary is the swish and popular seaside resort of Arcachon, with several kilometres of more Atlantic beaches. The town's particularly famed for its hundreds of posh 19th-century villas and the lush Parc Mauresque. in the Ville d'Hiver or winter town.
This is a tiptop region for wine too, on the Bordeaux, Bergeracois, Marmandais or Sauternes routes. There are 15 wineries on these in all, including several that are free to visit: make for Listrac-Médoc, Pauillac and Margaux to hunt some down.
