Outdoor pool with large sun terrace

General

  • Quiet family-run site in the Limousin-Perigord Regional Natural Park
  • On-site restaurant, fishing lake and outdoor swimming pool
  • 20 minutes' drive from Brantôme for canoe trips

Lounging by the pool or lounging by the lake… such is the dilemma facing folks at Camping L'Étang Bleu, a well-established holiday park five minutes’ drive from the small Dordogne town Vieux-Mareuil.

Ideally, of course, you’ll have scope for a bit of both – grab drinks, ice creams and snacks from the pool bar if you’re settling in for the former, or accessorise with a fishing rod for the latter, as there’s a multitude of carp, bream and perch lurking in these waters. And should your appetite for quiet loafing wain somewhat, there’s plenty of ways to get active as well: work out in the gym, gather pals for games of table tennis, pétanque or pool, or accompany the small sorts to the playground.

Dining’s a doddle here, too: the bistro serves up a whole range of home-cooked meals (including kid-friendly pizzas) and popular theme meals are set up throughout the summer. If you’d rather do your own thing, you’re welcome to cook on a barbie (all the bits and bobs can be picked up at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away).

Local villages and markets are ace places to pick up grub too; French-speaking English owners Marc and Jo will happily dole out advice on their faves, and can help guests truffle out good spots for days of walking, cycling or canoeing through the Dordogne countryside.

Really huge pitches fully private with hedges around. All have electricity and water points. The site is very big and spacious with lots of nice walking around it for dogs. The pool is lovely, and very well maintained. The owners are english and very helpful and friendly. It was quiet when we were there, which was nice for us. It had a bar and restaurant, which was basic but nice.

    Disliked:

The showers could do with a bit of tlc. Generally fine, but not brilliant, and a bit dingy. The general area was very quiet. No restaurants or bars in walking distance, and everything a bit of a drive. Great if you want to get away from it all, but the only shop nearby was Carrefour, a couple of miles drive away. The wifi was not good, even though you had to pay for it. very patchy and expensive! Also, good gym facilities but you have to pay extra to use them.

The most important thing to us was the very friendly welcome from Jo, Mark and family, they made us feel like part of their lovely family. We needed bread and water on the day we arrived, Jo picked it up for us as she was heading out to the shop and we paid when she got back. That's great customer service and was very much appreciated as we'd had a long and hot drive to the campsite. The pitches are very big, we had our van, a blow up gazebo and still had room to move around on the pitch which was great for our 4 year old grandson. The site was quiet which was great and just what we wanted but it's a pity as the campsite should be full as it's so good and the area is fantastic. We loved sitting out in the evening after dark listening to the owls in the woods, amazing.
The facilities are clean and well maintained. Water was hot in the showers which was great.
The swimming pool area is fabulous, there's sun beds so you can chill. It's very clean and well maintained. Our grandson was in the pool every day even when it rained, we loved it. We particularly liked the pool bar as we could get a drink or ice cream and add it to a tab so we could pay later.
We ate twice at the campsite and we would highly recommend the food which is cooked by Jo. The atmosphere in the bar/bistro was great and we were made to feel very welcome. Feeding our grandson was so easy, Jo had it all covered. Make sure you eat once at the bistro it's worth it.
If your in the area its well worth going to L'Etang Bleu.

Local attractions

There are heaps of lovely villages and towns to poke around nearby; the owners’ top picks include Nontron and Brantôme, which is home to a Benedictine abbey with an unusual troglodyte section. It’s also a fab place to hire canoes for a day paddling your way along the Dronne river. Both towns are about 20 minutes away by car.

A little further afield (around an hour’s drive) is the medieval town of Rochechouart, where the gorgeous 13th-century castle is now home to a cracking contemporary art museum. If you fancy racking up more château visits, those of Châlus-Chabrol, Bourdeilles and Brie are all less than an hour’s drive away.

If it’s more outdoorsy antics that you’re after, there’s heaps of those too – you’re in the Limousin-Perigord Regional Natural Park here, so there’s easy access to lots of walks and cycle paths, along with other activities including horse riding and canyoning. An adventure park with ziplines and treetop trails is half an hour away, and the folks on site sometimes organise go-kart outings too.
