Camping L'Étang Bleu: Outdoor pool, with adjacent pool bar

General

  • Quiet family-run site in the Limousin-Perigord Regional Natural Park
  • On-site restaurant, fishing lake and outdoor swimming pool
  • 20 minutes' drive from Brantôme for canoe trips

Lounging by the pool or lounging by the lake… such is the dilemma facing guests at Camping L'Étang Bleu, a well-established holiday park five minutes’ drive from the small Dordogne town Vieux-Mareuil.

Ideally, of course, you’ll have scope for a bit of both – grab drinks, ice creams and snacks from the pool bar if you’re settling in for the former, or accessorise with a fishing rod for the latter, as there’s a multitude of carp, bream and perch lurking in these waters. And should your appetite for quiet loafing wain somewhat, there’s plenty of ways to get active as well: work out in the gym, gather pals for games of table tennis, pétanque or pool, or accompany the small sorts to the playground.

Dining’s a doddle here, too: the bistro serves up a whole range of home-cooked meals (including kid-friendly pizzas) and popular theme meals are set up throughout the summer. If you’d rather do your own thing, you’re welcome to cook on a barbie (all the bits and bobs can be picked up at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away).

Local villages and markets are ace places to pick up grub too; French-speaking English owners Marc and Jo will happily dole out advice on their favourites, and can help guests find good spots for days of walking, cycling or canoeing through the Dordogne countryside.

The British owners are very friendly and helpful. Large hedged pitches, lovely quiet rural location within a short driving distance to a small supermarket that was amazingly well stocked. Great pool has got to be the cleanest I've seen in a longtime only wish it was heated (maybe invest in solar panels to heat it!) Home cooked food available in the restaurant/bar that was very good. Clean toilets, showers and wash-up area. Excellent value for money. Will definitely consider returning.

    Size of pitches

    Disliked:

Distance to the fishing pond for a person with limited mobility it was a long walk to get to the pond for the size of the campsite could have done with better electricity trip power every time we put the kettle on

From the manager...

Thank you for your review which does not come as any surprise.

When you made the booking asking for a pitch near the lake I immediately contacted you to advise that this was not possible and on your arrival I also re-iterated that the lake is at a distance from the pitches. You were perfectly able to move on at that point.

With regards to our electric supply it is 10 amp and we have a mix of french and european sockets. A domestic english kettle with a French domestic adaptor is not only inadequate but ultimately dangerous . When camping it is advisable to equipe yourself with the proper equipement.

We hope that your onward travel was more to your liking.

All the facilities. Showers and toilet block kept spotless. Amazing size swimming pool. And some great entertainment While at this site I suffered a heart attack. The site owners Jo & Mark could not be more helpful. They arranged a doctor and ambulance within minutes to rush me to the nearest hospital. While in hospital they really looked after my wife on site also giving her lifts in to see me after my operation I can not thank them enough. Wonderful people saved my life. For which I will be for ever grateful

Our first time taking our caravan abroad and we will definitely return.
When we arrived we were allocated a lovely pitch (No 11) near to the pool. The site is lovely and clean. The pool is a great size and cleaned daily.
There is a Pool Bar & Restaurant on site. We didn't eat there but I believe the food is really nice.
The owners Joanne & Mark were really helpful and booked restaurants and other things we had planned over the telephone for us as they are fluent in French and we only know the basics.
The site is in a lovely area and is only a short drive to the local supermarkets and Brantome itself - which is definitely worth a visit - it's beautiful.

Local attractions

There are heaps of lovely villages and towns to poke around nearby; the owners’ top picks include Nontron and Brantôme, which is home to a Benedictine abbey with an unusual troglodyte section. It’s also a fab place to hire canoes for a day paddling your way along the Dronne river. Both towns are about 20 minutes away by car.

A little further afield (around an hour’s drive) is the medieval town of Rochechouart, where the gorgeous 13th-century castle is now home to a cracking contemporary art museum. If you fancy racking up more château visits, those of Châlus-Chabrol, Bourdeilles and Brie are all less than an hour’s drive away.

If it’s more outdoorsy antics that you’re after, there’s heaps of those too – you’re in the Limousin-Perigord Regional Natural Park here, so there’s easy access to lots of walks and cycle paths, along with other activities including horse riding and canyoning. An adventure park with ziplines and treetop trails is half an hour away, and the staff on site sometimes organise go-kart outings too.
