  • Family campsite five minutes’ drive from Gaugeac, in the Dordogne
  • Cloître de Cadouin 20 minutes’ drive; Château des Milandes 35 minutes
  • Swimming pool, lake and entertainment; shop, bar and brasserie
Five minutes’ drive from the historic, mellow-stone village of Gaugeac, Le Moulin de David sits in the Dordogne region of Pays des Bastides et Cités Médiévales. Covering an area of almost 40 acres, the family-centric site sits in a forested valley (dogs are welcome to share woodland walks with you) with a stream running through it – handy for cooling off on hot summer days. And you have other swimming options, too – a pool and a lake, the latter with an inflatable course to scramble over, as well as waterslides. Pétanque courts, table-tennis games and a football pitch all add to the sporty fun, and there are play areas for younger children. In high season, there are on-site teams organising all sorts of activities and fun for kids of all ages. Grown-ups get a look in too, with themed evening entertainment in the restaurants. Foodwise, you’re covered from morning until night, with a French breakfast of fresh pastries and baguettes to get you going in the morning (please order the day before), a snack bar, a pizzeria and a brasserie serving regional dishes and fine Bergerac wines. If you’re firmly into self-catering, the on-site shop is well stocked with local produce so you can keep everybody happily well fed.

Liked: The campsite layout was good for families, a great mix of accommodations and pitches and the facilities were lovely and clean. The pool, bar and the entertainment that was put on by the site was also great. The owner and all the staff were very friendly.

Disliked: The site was a bit remote but this also added to its charm. The downside was that we did find ourselves driving a lot off site for food shopping and day activities on the river. Mosquitos were also a bother in the hot and humid weather but that’s camping for you :)

Local attractions

The rope courses at Parc en Ciel (15 minutes’ drive) snake through five hectares of woodland, and they cover all levels of ability. The site also has zipwires and free jumping on to a giant inflatable cushion. For those who don’t have a head for heights, there’s a miniature golf course and disc-golf, too, plus a swimming pool. Dating from the late 15th century, the Cloître de Cadouin (20 minutes) is a Flamboyant Gothic cloister attached to a medieval Cistercian abbey on the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela. Stroll under the impressive vaults, admiring the ornate arches and details of the various decorative sculptures. The famed dancer and entertainer Josephine Baker got married and used to live at the Château des Milandes (35 minutes). As well as checking out costumes from her shows, you can find out how she turned this 15th-century castle into a ‘global village’ for children in need. There are also manicured gardens to roam around in, and birds of prey demonstrations.
