- Cosy glamping pods with lake views near Chepstow in Monmouthshire
- Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle 15 minutes’ drive: Forest of Dean 40
- Proper beds and private decking; woodland walks direct from the site
Neatly spaced out and overlooking a lake and trees, the gorgeous Fairoak Lakes camping pods sit in a secluded valley near Chepstow in Monmouthshire. They’re surrounded by 10 acres of woodland and fields for that relaxing, back-to-nature vibe, and as well as your neighbours the resident goats, you’re more than likely to see plenty of local wildlife flitting around.
This tiny rural site is family run; the owners built the wooden pods themselves and each is proudly named and themed after a woodland animal that you might just spot hereabouts.
When it comes to the details, each unit is heated by electricity and fitted out with comfy double beds and a kitchenette with all the essentials. Outside is a private decking area where you can cosy up for barbecues, and handy family facilities away from the pods include showers with plenty of hot water as well as a parent and baby washroom.
Access woodland walks and mountain-bike trails direct from the site, and the Offa’s Dyke hiking trail starts in nearby Chepstow (15 minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up supplies for your supper or have a night out in the town’s pubs and restaurants.

Local attractions
This is a region with bags of history, and there’s no better place to start learning about it than at Tintern Abbey, with photogenic ruins sitting on the banks of the River Wye since it was sacked in the 16th century. Built in medieval times to defend the English and Welsh borders, clifftop Chepstow Castle (both 15 minutes’ drive), is now open for circular walks around its grounds.
If fabulous gardens are more your thing, head for walkways fringed with yew and beech hedges at Veddw House Garden (five minutes, open in summer) or explore the fairytale follies at Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes (20 minutes).
The Forest of Dean has walks aplenty as well as cycling trails – rent a bike from the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre if needs be – as well as a sculpture trail with stained-glass windows and brightly coloured obelisks. For more active days out, go whitewater rafting on the River Wye or take the kids on Gruffalo-hunting expeditions around the lake at Mallards Pike (all 40 minutes).
