  • Cosy glamping pods with lake views near Chepstow in Monmouthshire
  • Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle 15 minutes’ drive: Forest of Dean 40
  • Proper beds and private decking; woodland walks direct from the site
Neatly spaced out and overlooking a lake and trees, the gorgeous Fairoak Lakes camping pods sit in a secluded valley near Chepstow in Monmouthshire. They’re surrounded by 10 acres of woodland and fields for that relaxing, back-to-nature vibe, and as well as your neighbours the resident goats, you’re more than likely to see plenty of local wildlife flitting around. This tiny rural site is family run; the owners built the wooden pods themselves and each is proudly named and themed after a woodland animal that you might just spot hereabouts. When it comes to the details, each unit is heated by electricity and fitted out with comfy double beds and a kitchenette with all the essentials. Outside is a private decking area where you can cosy up for barbecues, and handy family facilities away from the pods include showers with plenty of hot water as well as a parent and baby washroom. Access woodland walks and mountain-bike trails direct from the site, and the Offa’s Dyke hiking trail starts in nearby Chepstow (15 minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up supplies for your supper or have a night out in the town’s pubs and restaurants.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The location is one of the most beautiful I have ever been to. Quiet and isolated but only 15 minutes from Chepstow for all the supplies and cafes and pubs we needed. Joe was a great host checking we had everything we needed and supplying wood for the fire pit and bbq. We will definitely be back!

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Absolutely everything, the pod was warm extremely comfortable, clean well equipped with nice little decorative touches. The location is Second to none in fact absolutely stunning our 8 year old daughter loved feeding the ducks geese chicken the goats and especially Fred the horse. Our hosts Joe and Rio could not have been better both welcoming and helpful. Most definitely the most relaxing week we’ve had away. Lovely forest walks on your doorstep. Toilet/ shower facilities are modern clean and well functioning. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Thank you Joe and Rio.

Disliked: Nothing negative to say at all. For our family this lake holiday was perfect

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Such a lovely peaceful place. The kids loved feeding all the animals, and making a den in the forest. The toilets and showers were lovely and clean, as was the pod and we had loads of wood for the fire. The road to get there is a a bit daunting as it is narrow but it is only for a short distance and there are a few passing places, we didn't meet anyone coming the other way when we were using it.

Disliked: The mattress on the double bed is very lumpy, so bring a mattress topper if you have one, because it is a such a lovely place to stay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the lovely review. We will buy a new mattress or a mattress topper now we are aware

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: We really loved this beautiful, peaceful, quiet site. Our son spent most of the time swimming in the lake. I took a book but didn't read it as I couldn't stop looking at the beautiful view and wildlife. We especially enjoyed being able to feed the horse, goats ducks and geese. I loved the fire pit and the BBQ was used a lot. The owners were very informative about near by places to visit.

Disliked: There is absolutely nothing we disliked. But if we had to say something it would probably be the very small lanes you use to get to it as there are many braken branches hanging over the road, but I think that just added to the charm of the place. It's absolutely stunning

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you, this is a lovely review! We hope the branches are being cut back soon

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The setting is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. The pod was well equipped and the bathroom block clean and well maintained with plenty of hot water. Even in rainy and cold weather it was a fabulous spot. The pods are not too close together and the cooking and eating spots feel not too exposed.

Disliked: The access roads are a little tricky to negotiate.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Everything about the setting is idyllic. The pods are a great size with Everything provided. We kept the fire pit going & bbq'd each night. The facilities are clean & spacious. We went with friends, hired 3 of the 4 pods & had the spot all to ourselves which selfishly was lovely. Joe at the site was always around to help out if we needed anything. Absolutely beautiful spot to visit.

Disliked: The rain...it did pour down.

Local attractions

This is a region with bags of history, and there’s no better place to start learning about it than at Tintern Abbey, with photogenic ruins sitting on the banks of the River Wye since it was sacked in the 16th century. Built in medieval times to defend the English and Welsh borders, clifftop Chepstow Castle (both 15 minutes’ drive), is now open for circular walks around its grounds. If fabulous gardens are more your thing, head for walkways fringed with yew and beech hedges at Veddw House Garden (five minutes, open in summer) or explore the fairytale follies at Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes (20 minutes). The Forest of Dean has walks aplenty as well as cycling trails – rent a bike from the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre if needs be – as well as a sculpture trail with stained-glass windows and brightly coloured obelisks. For more active days out, go whitewater rafting on the River Wye or take the kids on Gruffalo-hunting expeditions around the lake at Mallards Pike (all 40 minutes).
