  • Valley site a 15-minute drive from Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon Beacons
  • Bike Park Wales 15 minutes’ drive; Caerphilly half an hour
  • A few minutes’ walk from a well-stocked fishing lake; dogs welcome
The valley carved by the river Nant Bargod Rhymni, in southern Wales, is the lush setting for Lakeside View Campsite. This family-friendly site, a 15-minute drive from Merthyr Tydfil (and the Brecon Mountain Railway), is a top spot to access Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons). Cue long days spent exploring hiking trails, waterfalls and caves, ancient castle ruins and the area’s rich industrial heritage. Lakeside View, which has both electric and non-electric grass pitches, is shaded by tall trees and has views of (not-so-distant) forested hillsides. Nearby Parc Cwm Darran (a few minutes’ walk away), on the site of a former colliery, is now a nature reserve/country park with trails, a playground and the serene Ogilvie Lake, which is stocked with carp, roach and perch. If you’re not into fishing, there’s plenty more you could be doing around here: cycling at Bike Park Wales (15 minutes’ drive), golfing (with several courses within a 15-minute drive) or horse riding (there are two centres within a 20-minute drive). But maybe all you want is to explore these spectacular mountainous landscapes with your faithful four-legged companion by your side, perhaps stopping at a country pub for a pint and a home-cooked meal. Speaking of cooking… the site has a communal kitchen area, and if you need provisions for the barbecue, the nearest shop is in the village of Pontlottyn (10 minutes). For larger supermarkets, head to Merthyr, which also has no shortage of restaurants.

Local attractions

In Merthyr Tydfil (15 minutes’ drive), the Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery looks like a medieval fortress but was built in the 1820s by a local industrialist. Its collections cover the area’s Roman heritage, the years of the Industrial Revolution and much of what happened in between, while the vast area of parkland has a lake and a model railway. The Big Pit National Coal Museum (25 minutes) occupies a mine that operated until 1980. Today, visitors can take a tour of its underground locations, which include a reconstructed coal face and the machines used to extract coal. There are also exhibition spaces detailing life as a miner from the Victorian era to the present. Caerphilly (half an hour) has developed around its 13th-century castle, a moated structure surrounded by the lush Dafydd Williams Gardens. On the outskirts of town, Van Road Trails is a dirt jump park where the kids can practise aerial tricks.
