  • Basic, clean site 10 minutes' walk from Newborough village
  • A 40-minute walk from Newborough beach; Ynys Llanddwyn further on
  • Great views of Snowdonia and dark skies for nighttime stargazing
What a spot – family-run Isle of Anglesey site Maes Tywyn Campsite is in a splendid setting with peaceful surrounds, easy access to walks and beaches, and village amenities less than a mile away. This nifty location is a 10-minute trot from the little village of Newborough (or Niwbwrch if you’re practising your Welsh lingo) – there’s a pavement all the way along the road, so you should have a safe enough saunter to the village’s café, chip shop, convenience store or pub. If you’d like your eats even closer you can either light up a barbecue or meander along to the great fish and chip shop half a mile down the road. Getting out to the rest of the island is a cinch from here: there are plenty of places to walk in the surrounds (perennial fave spot Ynys Llanddwyn is around an hour away on foot), and you can get to even the most far-flung beaches with a drive of half an hour or so. Fancy ditching the car for a day? There’s a bus stop a short walk away for buses to Bangor and beyond. Back at base, peaceful times are very much encouraged – there’s heaps of space to chill out here with gorgeous views towards Snowdonia by day and a fab array of stars overhead after dark (clouds permitting, of course). There’s also a playground for the small sorts to scamper about in; and it’s been cleverly kitted out with benches for restful parental supervision.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very friendly welcome to such a beautiful place. Everything you need and lots of space. Lovely park for the kids too. Definitely recommend.

Disliked Too far to walk to the beach unless you're extremely fit, and car park gets full early.... this is nothing to do with the campsite. Just thought it's worth mentioning to get down there early, or go later as the evening comes in to get a chance to see the spectacular views.

From the manager: We're sorry that your stay wasn't as enjoyable as you would of liked it to have been. We work very hard to keep all our customers as happy as we can. Having a mixed toilet and shower facility offers as much flexibility as we can provide. Whereas the vast majority of people are okay with mixed facilities, we totally understand that they're not to everyone's liking. We're therefore going to add a small section in thd general description of the site on the PitchUp booking platform, making it clearer that they facilities are mixed. August is a very busy month and the school summer holidays combined with the fabulous weather, has seen lots of people looking to book camping holidays. We do cap the number of people we take on site, based on access to on-site facilities. But it stands to reason that these facilities will get busy at certain times of the day, during busy periods. We hope this information is helpful in some small way.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely site, owners were friendly and helpful, toilets and showers clean, pitches were flat and lots of space. The village of Newborough up the road with pub, shop and chippy.
I would highly recommend for a quiet and relaxing stay.

Disliked It is a shame that they can only be open for 4 weeks of the year.

Local attractions

If you only see one attraction on Anglesey it really must be Ynys Llanddwyn, the little rocky outcrop named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers. The best way to get there from the site is to head out on foot, walking to the lighthouse and ruined chapel through the Newborough Forest. Pack a picnic to scoff on next-door Newborough beach, and perhaps bring binoculars in case any seals are swimming in the area. Should you have a bit longer (and really you should), there’s plenty more to keep you busy around the island. Family days out include pony rides and animal feeding frenzies at Foel Farm (10 minutes’ drive), getting to know the sea-dwelling critters at Anglesey Sea Zoo (10 minutes) and viewing the vintage vehicles at Tacla Taid Anglesey Transport Museum (five minutes). If you’ve a head for history, take days out at Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes), Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes) or the ruins of Aberlleiniog Castle (half an hour), or scooch back over to the mainland to the castles in Caernarfon (25 minutes), Conwy (35 minutes) and Criccieth (50 minutes).
