General

  • Basic, clean site 10 minutes' walk from Newborough village
  • An hour's walk from Newborough beach and Ynys Llanddwyn
  • Great views of Snowdonia and dark skies for nighttime stargazing

What a spot – family-run Isle of Anglesey site Maes Tywyn Campsite is in a splendid setting with peaceful surrounds, easy access to walks and beaches, and village amenities less than a mile away.

This nifty location is a 10-minute trot from the little village of Newborough (or Niwbwrch if you’re practising your Welsh lingo) – there’s a pavement all the way along the road so you should have a safe enough saunter to the village’s café, chip shop, convenience store or pub. If you’d like your eats even closer you can either light up a barbie or meander along to the Michelin-starred restaurant that happens to be a mere five minutes away.

Getting out to the rest of the island is a cinch from here: there are plenty of places to walk in the surrounds (perennial fave spot Ynys Llanddwyn is an hour away on foot), and you can get to even the most far-flung beaches with a drive of half an hour or so. Fancy ditching the car for a day? There’s a bus stop a short walk away for buses to Bangor and beyond.

Back at base, peaceful times are very much encouraged – there’s heaps of space to chill out here with gorgeous views towards Snowdonia by day and a fab array of stars overhead after dark (clouds permitting, of course). There’s also a playground for the small sorts to scamper about in; and it’s been cleverly kitted out with benches for restful parental supervision).

A peaceful site with good, clean facilities and very friendly owner09/13/2019

Quiet location and Jane was very welcoming. There is a lovely walk to the straits with views over the mainland and equally nice walk alongside the forest to the beach which is good for swimming. And the soil is perfect for pitching a tent, the pegs go in easily but hold firm!

The site is described as 'basic' so we expected nothing more than a loo and a sink with cold water. But there is a good shower with hot water, a freezer, microwave and kettle available, plus seating outside, all of which were spotless. The facilities would probably not be adequate at really busy times as they stand. We will happily go back for another stay.

    Disliked:

The pub and chippy in Newborough stop serving food really early so don't hang about if you want supper!

Nice little quiet family site. Lovely views of fields and Snowdonia. Great for Star gazing too at night as it was dark with no light pollution. Owners of the campsite were very polite and helpful. Great site for a base to explore Anglesey and not too far either from mainland. Only downside was that there was only 1 shower which was kept clean but everytime someone either flushed one of the two toilets or ran sink taps either shower went cold or off. Will deffo be going back but prob take my own shower.

Lovely views of Snowdonia, ideal location for a 40min beautiful walk to Newborough beach. Back to basics campsite, just what we needed. 1st year opening this year but they are planning to upgrade facilities for next season. Really helpful owners, loaning out braziers for use, fantastic having a real fire to sit around in the evening. Make sure to visit the pop up restaurant at wild lodge next door, superb food. Would have loved to stay for longer.

    Disliked:

Only 1 shower and 2 loos, but no issues waiting for use and clean facilities. Facilities to be upgraded for next season.

Very spacious site, able to choose own pitch, owners were lovely! The dish wash room/kitchen was great with fridge and freezer, microwave and hot water to wash up in. Was much more pleasant after the bank holiday weekend was over and was more quiet.

    Disliked:

As other reviews state, facilities are very limited but expansion is planned.

Location is great with fantastic views, very friendly and helpful owners. They even came over to see if I needed help packing up my tent as it was going dark (I had decided to leave a night early due to strong winds forecast the following morning). All pitches are level, clean toilet/shower block. Recycling of waste is encouraged with segregated bins.

Local attractions

If you only see one attraction on Anglesey it really must be Ynys Llanddwyn, the little rocky outcrop named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers. The best way to get there from the site is to head out on foot, walking to the lighthouse and ruined chapel through the Newborough Forest. Pack a picnic to scoff on next-door Newborough beach, and perhaps bring binoculars in case any seals are swimming in the area.

Should you have a bit longer (and really you should), there’s plenty more to keep you busy around the island. Family days out include pony rides and animal feeding frenzies at Foel Farm (10 minutes’ drive), getting to know the sea-dwelling critters at Anglesey Sea Zoo (10 minutes) and viewing the vintage vehicles at Tacla Taid Anglesey Transport Museum (five minutes).

If you’ve a head for history, take days out at Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes), Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes) or the ruins of Aberlleiniog Castle (half an hour), or scooch back over to the mainland to the castles in Caernarfon (25 minutes), Conwy (35 minutes) and Criccieth (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Caernarfon Castle (3.2 miles)
  • National Slate Museum (10.0 miles)
  • Snowdon Mountain Railway (10.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens (6.1 miles)
  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (22.3 miles)
