General

  • Basic, clean site 10 minutes' walk from Newborough village
  • An hour's walk from Newborough beach and Ynys Llanddwyn
  • Great views of Snowdonia and dark skies for nighttime stargazing

What a spot – family-run Isle of Anglesey site Maes Tywyn Campsite is in a splendid setting with peaceful surrounds, easy access to walks and beaches, and village amenities less than a mile away.

This nifty location is a 10-minute trot from the little village of Newborough (or Niwbwrch if you’re practising your Welsh lingo) – there’s a pavement all the way along the road so you should have a safe enough saunter to the village’s café, chip shop, convenience store or pub. If you’d like your eats even closer you can either light up a barbie or meander along to the Michelin-starred restaurant that happens to be a mere five minutes away.

Getting out to the rest of the island is a cinch from here: there are plenty of places to walk in the surrounds (perennial fave spot Ynys Llanddwyn is an hour away on foot), and you can get to even the most far-flung beaches with a drive of half an hour or so. Fancy ditching the car for a day? There’s a bus stop a short walk away for buses to Bangor and beyond.

Back at base, peaceful times are very much encouraged – there’s heaps of space to chill out here with gorgeous views towards Snowdonia by day and a fab array of stars overhead after dark (clouds permitting, of course). There’s also a playground for the small sorts to scamper about in; and it’s been cleverly kitted out with benches for restful parental supervision.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Jane is the best! So chatty and informed about the area, she gave me loads of tips and was always there to offer help and answer my questions! Plenty of shower and toilet facilities, WiFi was adequate and a nice quiet campsite close to a number of beaches! Would return for sure.

Jane and Terry who run the site could not have done anymore to make people welcome they work really hard, and would do anything for you to make things easier especially when our camping chairs broke they loaned some of there own
facilities are very good even a kettle and microwave in the washing up room, also handy for charging up phones etc

I've stayed here with a friend recently and loved the site and area so much I decided to come back. I love a small site, great amenities, friendly staff. My previous visit was lovely and peaceful, not so much this visit

    Disliked:

Nothing wrong with this site but the site next door had a family parked up over the hedge to where I'd pitched who were extremely loud and annoying! Screaming at eachother until 1am then the following morning woke me up with yet more shouting at 6am, I hardly slept! Next time I'll be pitching the field side of the site!

An amazing and friendly welcome with great customer service throughout. Clean and fresh facilities (including shower, toilets and washing up facilities), level pitches and the being able to use a fireplace was an added bonus. Assisted us with a place to get logs, and even offered us some if we where unable to purchase any, but luckily there is a couple of places near by. Amazing location with plenty to do and gorgeous walks, and the campsite is close enough to start all your walks from the campsite itself, even to the beach. Great value for money.

Local attractions

If you only see one attraction on Anglesey it really must be Ynys Llanddwyn, the little rocky outcrop named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers. The best way to get there from the site is to head out on foot, walking to the lighthouse and ruined chapel through the Newborough Forest. Pack a picnic to scoff on next-door Newborough beach, and perhaps bring binoculars in case any seals are swimming in the area.

Should you have a bit longer (and really you should), there’s plenty more to keep you busy around the island. Family days out include pony rides and animal feeding frenzies at Foel Farm (10 minutes’ drive), getting to know the sea-dwelling critters at Anglesey Sea Zoo (10 minutes) and viewing the vintage vehicles at Tacla Taid Anglesey Transport Museum (five minutes).

If you’ve a head for history, take days out at Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes), Plas Newydd House and Gardens (15 minutes) or the ruins of Aberlleiniog Castle (half an hour), or scooch back over to the mainland to the castles in Caernarfon (25 minutes), Conwy (35 minutes) and Criccieth (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Caernarfon Castle (5.2 kilometers)
  • Snowdon Mountain Railway (16.1 kilometers)
  • National Slate Museum (16.1 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens (9.8 kilometers)
  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (35.8 kilometers)
