  • Stay on a working farm site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: lots of nearby trails
  • Less than half an hour’s drive from the Welsh coast beaches
You won’t want to hide among the bushes during your stay at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan Park, a family-friendly site on a working farm less than 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Dolgellau in Gwynedd – this place is all about getting out and about. In the southern reaches of Snowdonia National Park, Llwyn yr Helm is a haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: Mawddach trail, Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk all start in Dolgellau, and Cadair Idris mountain’s Minfford Path starts less than 15 minutes from site. That’s the hikers sorted, so what about the bikers? Coed y Brenin Biking and Visitor Centre is 20 minutes away, and the fab Antur Stiniog downhill biking trails are within an hour. If you’re not much of an outdoor adventurer, there’s plenty else nearby: try plane spotting at the famous Mach Loop, ziplining at Zip World Slate Caverns or poking around the scenic Italianate village of Portmeirion – or you could make a beeline to the beaches and harbours at Fairbourne or Barmouth, where boat trips and watersports abound? Back on site, fire up the barbecue for dinner (essentials can be sorted in the on-site shop) then kick up your feet in the evening, soaking in the views of the Cadair Idris mountain range, reading, or watching a DVD borrowed from reception. If you’d prefer to venture out, there are plenty of restaurants to try within 25 minutes of the site.

Liked The site is lovely, great location, we come here often. Toilet block is absolutely amazing. Friendly owners.

Great WiFi, park and dog walking field. Probably our favourite site we have visited whilst in Wales.

Disliked Never had any problems before but on our first night, the three 4x4’s camped opposite us left the site quite late on and came back at 11pm, reversing on to their pitches with their main beam lights on and just left them on for ages. The gates should really be locked at a certain time to avoid people like this leaving / arriving on the site so late.

Liked Toilets 5* facilities - that clean you could eat your lunch off the floor!!
Clean, tidy, friendly site! Not too big & busy.
The petting animals are a lovely touch!

Disliked Nothing! Honestly cannot say a bad word about this campsite, we loved it!

Powered grass campsite

Liked Lovely quiet, clean site, no noise after 10pm, although someone might have to have a word with the owls in that area!. The pitches are spacious and the heated toilet/shower block is a thing of wonder. Nice and handy for visiting numerous places in the area. The separate playground for kids and a dog walking area are a great idea. Kiddies will love the petting zoo at the side of the site.

Disliked Not so much a dislike as an idea.... The small shop on site could do with stocking a few more items, milk, bread etc, and a licence to sell alcohol would be a big bonus, just being able to buy a bottle of wine and sit outside the tent in the evening without having to drive to the nearest town would be great. Having said that the shopkeeper/receptionist, Joy, is an absolute sweetie. She and all of the staff were so friendly and helpful. Lovely folk.

Great site, would highly recommend

Liked I loved the views from this campsite, the pitches are a great size, bathrooms are clean and modern, warm and plenty of cubicles too! It's a great site and I've been 3 times now, it's been brilliant! There is a walk to the pub about 50 minutes away too!

Disliked It is high in the mountains so can be quite wet and quite a few midges!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful green location in middle of countryside. Views of mountains, fairly central for coast, inland and northern hikes. Staff and owners friendly. Well kept and tidy. Toilet facilities were awesome the best I have seen, well made to last, easy to clean, bright and spacious.

Disliked The signage for where everything is located could be larger and more obvious. WiFi cut out now and then.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments. We hope you will visit again

Dros y Bont Decked powered tent campsite (secluded)

Liked Good location, enjoyed pitching the tent on decking as if we had been on the grass pitches it would have been much less enjoyable in the poor weather. Bathrooms were clean and very warm with great showers.

Disliked Reception is only open for an hour in the evening and two in the morning. I would not have liked the grass tent pitches as they were sloped and some were water logged in the rain.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments and feedback we will pass on.
We are happy you enjoyed your time at the park and enjoyed camping on our lovely decking by the river.
We hope you will return when the weather is much brighter.

Local attractions

Start your hols in the past with trips on the steam trains at Bala Lake Railway and Fairbourne Miniature Railway, both less than 25 minutes’ drive away, then go zooming into the future at the Centre for Alternative Technology, an eco-centre teaching sustainable development methods. Budding angler looking for your fishing fix? Turn your boat to Cregennan lakes about 25 minutes from the site to cast a line – if nothing’s biting, there are scenic trails around the lake so it won’t be a wasted trip. Stay out in the open by joining the flock for a sheep trekking experience, also 25 minutes away, or dive below the earth’s surface and clamber into a boat at award-winning King Arthur’s Labyrinth. For something a little more high culture, the Machynlleth modern art museum is half an hour from Llwyn yr Helm and is well worth a poke around.
