  • Snowdonia National Park site, five minutes’ walk from the beach
  • A 10-minute drive from Barmouth and 30 minutes from famed Portmeirion
  • Indoor play area, heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room, small shop
If beach-filled days, heady hikes and lots else to do add up to the exact hol you’re looking for, then settling in at Parc Caerelwan might be exactly what you need. The family-friendly site is about four miles from the traditional seaside resort of Barmouth in Gwynedd. In the spectacular Snowdonia National Park, the site’s well-placed for rambles, bikes and a host of explores with stunning vistas. An easy five-minute saunter will bring guests to the lengthy sandy stretch of Barmouth beach, placing seaside days within handily easy reach. Away from the sea, Snowdon is a little over an hour’s drive from base, and those who want to soak up the views without all the effort can head along to the Snowdon Mountain Railway for trips to the summit under someone else’s steam. Staying put on site comes highly recommended as well. Kids will be handily entertained in the outdoor play area, and inclement weather won’t disrupt too much either... The indoor soft play area has two levels to explore, with a ball pit, slide and plenty of other distractions to keep kids occupied. Grownups are catered for too, of course: an indoor heated pool will make guests feel better about holiday-level eats, while the sauna and steam room add another dimension to any bid to unwind. On particularly lazy days, a small shop on site that stocks essentials should make even trips to the supermarket unnecessary.

Local attractions

Start stays hereabouts with a trip into Barmouth, four miles from base. The pretty seaside resort has a beach and promenade to stroll along, and guests who are keen to explore further afield can head to the station to catch trains up and down the Welsh coast, or can secure a spot on the ferry for a quick crossing to Fairbourne. Fans of water-based activities will certainly want to catch that ferry (or make the 35-minute drive around the Mawddach) – the beach at Fairbourne is home to windsurfing, and boats can be caught from the town for sea and fishing excursions. Tastes for surfing tickled by attempts in Fairbourne? Travel to Adventure Parc Snowdonia an hour and 15 minutes away to have a go on the artificial waves. Guests lured in by the fishing, on the other hand, should travel to Cregennan Lakes (40 minutes) for fly and worm fishing. If historical explores more fit the bill, start 15 minutes away with Harlech Castle, the site of the longest siege in British history (a whopping seven years), before heading on to the famed and spectacular Portmeirion (30 minutes), an Italian-style village built in one fell swoop in the early 20th century, recognisable from shows including the Prisoner, Doctor Who and Cold Feet.
