  • Vale of Clwyd site a mile from Ruthin town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from Snowdonia and 40 minutes from the coast
  • Views of the Clwydian Range: Moel Famau within walking distance
Even a quick look at the pics gives away that Coed Derw Camping has some cracking views out over the Clwydian Range… and that in turn should give you a hint that this Denbighshire site, within the grounds of the Vale Country Club, is a fine spot for a walking holiday. It’s a particularly fine spot if you’re in the area to climb Moel Famau, the region’s highest peak. This popular hiking area is within walking distance of the park so you can tackle it without any need to consider car parking – always something of a bonus. Your boots won’t be done once you’re back down from there: have a chat with the folk on site for ideas on where else to walk locally or take a drive to the Snowdonia National Park (about half an hour away). While you’re over in Snowdonia, you might like to tackle mountain bike trails, inland surfing or zipwires too; if that all sounds a bit much, head north to the seaside with a drive of 40 minutes or so. Got any more walking in your legs? It’s handy to know you can walk to the town of Ruthin in about 20 minutes (along a road that’s got pavement all the way) – although you could also drive in five minutes if you’re out of puff. Either way, there are plenty of places to eat and drink over there, plus takeaways and shops to pick up supplies for a barbecue back at base. Back at base, facilities include toilets, showers and free wifi.

Local attractions

Best way to get out for a walk? Head straight out from the site for the likes of Ruthin Gaol (half an hour on foot) or Moel Famau (an hour and 15 minutes). Once you’ve wandered locally there are heaps more fab routes in the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour’s drive) or out on the Denbighshire moors, where Llyn Brenig (half an hour) is a top spot for waterside walks, plus sailing and fishing. If you’ve got a bit of an adventurous streak, there are plenty of places to unleash that around here. If it’s moving at speed that gets your heart going, try out the mountain bike trails at One Planet Adventure (20 minutes), or scream along the ziplines at Zip World Fforest (45 minutes). For water-based antics, ride the surf waves at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (half an hour), or something subterranean, bounce on the underground trampolines at Zip World Slate Caverns (an hour). Time for a breather? Rhyl (40 minutes) is a fine choice for a day at the seaside, playing on the beach, riding the miniature railway and eyeballing the sea beasties at the aquarium.

Liked: I have mixed feelings on this site!

It's perfectly placed for visiting Ruthin, and walking the hills. The manager (owner?) was very friendly and quickly dealt with some noisy campers who were dancing and singing to loud music at 10.30pm. The pitches were very big, with lots of space between, and the views were fantastic, great for watching the sun set! 😃

Disliked: However, the shower and toilet facilities although very clean are shared with the country club. The showers were clean and had plenty of hot water, but the cubicles didn't have locks on them, and were small so you were had to dress in the open changing rooms with no privacy.

The toilets (only 2 cubicles per gender) were also shared with the club, and when a wedding party arrived in the evening, we were queuing up with the guests, which wasn't ideal!

Liked: Lovely site with beautiful views within walking distance to Ruthin centre which is beautiful.
Unusual site in that it is also a country club with gym facilities and is a wedding venue. Showers etc within these facilities which was ok although when there wedding was on didn’t like the idea of going for a shower and bumping in to guests.
Site seemed more expensive than others we’ve stayed on

Disliked: Site seemed more expensive than others we’ve stayed on.
Also owners dog was allowed to roam she was beautiful, friendly and very large my dog was intimidated by her and one evening we had to shut the tent to eat because she wouldn’t go away.
Did give WiFi code or any extra details left to work out for ourselves

Liked: Fantastic views. Well presented site with plenty of space. Clean facilities.
Ideally located for Rhuthin (walking distance) and Clywdian range. Griffin pub up the road (walking distance but take a torch) had a good range of local beers.

Disliked: Limited male toilet facilities- could be a problem if the site is busy. Make sure you’re prepared for a sloping pitch!

Liked: Lovely site with stunning views, but what also made it fantastic was the superb care from the team with my autistic son - he really struggled with the public shower block (which is lovely by the way) - he couldn't be amongst strangers changing without a changing room. I messaged the owners and received a response immediately inviting him to use one of the private bnb bathrooms - outstanding care going above and beyond. Lovely pitches in superb condition and will be returning

Disliked: Lovely walk to the village but maybe a mini shop on site would be really useful.
