General

  • Vale of Clwyd site a mile from Ruthin town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from Snowdonia and 40 minutes from the coast
  • Views of the Clwydian Range: Moel Famau within walking distance

Even a quick look at the pics gives away that Coed Derw Camping has some cracking views out over the Clwydian Range… and that in turn should give you a hint that this Denbighshire site, within the grounds of the Vale Country Club, is a fine spot for a walking holiday.

It’s a particularly fine spot if you’re in the area to climb Moel Famau, the region’s highest peak. This popular hiking area is within walking distance of the park so you can tackle it without any need to consider car parking – always something of a bonus.

Your boots won’t be done once you’re back down from there: have a chat with the folk on site for ideas on where else to walk locally or take a drive to the Snowdonia National Park (about half an hour away). While you’re over in Snowdonia, you might like to tackle mountain bike trails, inland surfing or zipwires too; if that all sounds a bit much, head north to the seaside with a drive of 40 minutes or so.

Got any more walking in your legs? It’s handy to know you can walk to the town of Ruthin in about 20 minutes (along a road that’s got pavement all the way) – although you could also drive in five minutes if you’re out of puff. Either way, there are plenty of places to eat and drink over there, plus takeaways and shops to pick up supplies for a barbecue back at base.

Back at base, facilities include toilets, showers and free wifi.

Right next to a busy road, we tried to camp as far away as possible and was told to move closer. It is very expensive, the most I have ever paid for camping and the worst site. No bar or pizza night as expected. The owners dogs were roaming around doing their business everywhere. We werent shown where the facilities were which wasn't very welcoming, then we spent ages wandering around looking for the skips for our rubbish. There was only one male and one female toilet, which would have been awful if it was busier. This is a nice wedding venue, but unfortunately the campsite I would not return and we left early due to the noise from the road. I have chosen to write a review, as I feel robbed of £126 and I don't want others to be as disappointed.

From the manager...

Hi,

Really sorry you feel this way after your stay with us.

Please, if you are unhapphy with your allocated pitch please contact us and we are more than happy to help find a pitch more suitable for yourselves. We are easily contactable via whatsapp and we are always on site if you need anything.

Pizza nights we arrange at peak periods throughout the year e.g bank holidays. Thus why we don’t advertise on our page (you must have read this in previous campers’ reviews)

On site we have one disabled toilet, 4 additional toilets and 5 urinals.

Sorry again for your dissapointment.

Very friendly and helpful owners, great facilities and amazing mountain views. Water taps on each pitch and all pitches a short walk to facilities.

    Disliked:

Only downside was there is a bar which is very tempting but it wasn't open enough for cold drinks and ice cream after a long day out walking (probably due to covid)

The owners are lovely and friendly, great at communication before and during our stay. The toilets and showers are very clean and very well presented. There are water taps at each pitch. There is a small bar onsite and they have pizza nights where you can order from a selection of pizzas to collect from the bar at a set time. Fabulous when you’ve just arrived and don’t fancy cooking! The location is great for shops (Tesco etc) in nearby Ruthin, 5 mins in car. We would definitely recommend this site.

The secenary was fantastic, views were amazing. Pristine shower facilities, good access to bins, lovely access to walk around the pond/stream, close proximity to town.

    Disliked:

Shower doors were not private enough for me and we needed to dress outside of the shower due to lack of space. This posed a problem when trying to wash myself and my child at the same time.

A dog took our food left at the front of our tent (inside), in daytime, on numerous occasions. Slightly annoying.

Local attractions

Best way to get out for a walk? Head straight out from the site for the likes of Ruthin Gaol (half an hour on foot) or Moel Famau (an hour and 15 minutes). Once you’ve wandered locally there are heaps more fab routes in the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour’s drive) or out on the Denbighshire moors, where Llyn Brenig (half an hour) is a top spot for waterside walks, plus sailing and fishing.

If you’ve got a bit of an adventurous streak, there are plenty of places to unleash that around here. If it’s moving at speed that gets your heart going, try out the mountain bike trails at One Planet Adventure (20 minutes), or scream along the ziplines at Zip World Fforest (45 minutes). For water-based antics, ride the surf waves at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (half an hour), or something subterranean, bounce on the underground trampolines at Zip World Slate Caverns (an hour).

Time for a breather? Rhyl (40 minutes) is a fine choice for a day at the seaside, playing on the beach, riding the miniature railway and eyeballing the sea beasties at the aquarium.

Must see

  • Bodelwyddan Castle (21.5 kilometres)
  • Rhuddlan Castle (22.6 kilometres)
