Glasbury river a stones throw away from the campsite

  • Family-friendly Powys campsite on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Kayak and canoe hire at the adjacent activity centre; café on site
Looking for an action-packed outdoor break with lots of high-octane watery fun to be had? A stay at River Wye Campsite puts you right on the banks of the river at Glasbury-on-Wye. Once there, you can hire canoes or kayaks to paddle downstream, go gorge walking along the Wye, or join in archery and axe-throwing sessions (at an extra cost) at the adjacent activity centre. No problem if your tastes lean more towards culture rather than sporting action, as the campsite is 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on Wye, making it a clever base for visiting the famed ‘book town’ – especially during the the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, held in late May and early June. Handy on-site facilities include a shower block with plenty of hot water (great for easing tired muscles after a day kayaking on the Wye), a washing-up area and plenty of parking space, either in the car park or next to your tent. Keen to upgrade your alfresco cooking skills? You’re welcome to use free-standing barbecues but please ensure they are raised off the grass to prevent any damage. Packs of kindling can be bought on site, and there’s a covered seating area for communal picnics. If you’d rather someone else took care of the catering, pick up soft drinks, ice cream and tempting cakes in the Paddlers Rest Café – you can order full English breakfasts in there too. On weekends throughout the summer months, the site has regular pop-up trucks with street food and regular live music. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in the fun, and there are woodland walks direct from the pitches to keep them exercised too. The owners ask that they are kept on leads while on site, please.

What customers say

This campsite offers a beautiful riverside setting with level sites and a chill vibe. Guests rave about the welcoming staff, on-site cafe, and great access to canoeing. Facilities are usually clean, though some find them a bit dated. Most enjoyed the peacefulness, but a few experienced noise; others noted insufficient facilities during peak times.

Primitive grass and earth campervan campsite

Liked Its potential, facilities could have been good and the location.

Cafe and ice cream on site was a bonus.

Disliked Over crowding of the site, noise, large groups.

Toilets dirty and not enough for the numbers needing to use them.

It was so overwhelming, we left, with no where booked to go to.

Staff we spoke to was very friendly.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked The location was perfect right next to the river.

The staff on the whole were really lovely and friendly.

Disliked The facilities were below par. No toilet roll on one day. The toilets were dirty and the ‘nice’ toilets for the glamping tents were not much better and the showers were not acceptable - nowhere to hang your towels and only a flimsy shower curtain between you and the 100s of people they crammed into the site over the weekend. The water wouldn’t drain after showers so you’re standing in dirty water from other people’s showers even if you’re just going to brush your teeth.

The owner made inappropriate comments - not professional at all.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked location close to Hay, staff friendliness, pop up food trucks, proximity of river for wild swimming and mountains for walks, visible stars, fire and dog friendliness

Disliked showers not working properly, loo roll often out, 9pm quiet was not enforced!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Great location, friendly staff and it’s a really nice pitch.

Disliked The toilets and showers aren’t good. They often don’t have toilet roll. They’re dirty and one toilet didn’t even have a seat.

Probably the worst toiletries / showers I’ve seen in a camp site.

Liked Super friendly and helpful staff.
Close to the river.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked In no particular order the things I liked about this place was; the space, ping pong, cafe, bar, manager (Rob), groundsman (John), wifi (but only really in the cafe which we're lucky to have whilst camping anyway!) sandpit, loos, showers, always bog roll in the loos & hot water in the taps! River beach, location, kid friendly, trees, how close it is to many things to do. Washing up space, freezer for ice blocks, camp fired allowed (off ground). We were pitched in a perfect spot with shade & sun and a good view of the site so the boy could run around to his hearts content.

Disliked There were only a few things I didn't like and they couldn't be helped; there were quite a few other campers in big groups who were very noisy until at least midnight. It was very busy over the weekend but they all left on Sunday morn so we had a lovely peaceful time for the rest of our stay. The loos/ showers were a bit cramped and probably could do with a freshen up but functionally they were just fine. The light was on a timer so a few times I was on the loo/in the shower in the dark! Haha!
It was right by quite a main road and residential houses and not much of a view. We normally like to feel we're out in the sticks a bit but it was exactly what we were looking for so a small price to pay.
We left just before the hen do arrived...thank goodness! Hahaha!

Local attractions

For riverside rambles with the kids and dogs, join the Wye Valley Walk directly from your pitch, or head into the Brecon Beacons National Park (20 minutes’ drive) for more testing walks amid mountain landscapes. To trace the ancient border between England and Wales on a longer hike, follow Offa’s Dyke Path along Hergest Ridge from Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to Kington (four and a half hours’ walk). Need a day off from all the energetic stuff? Treat kids to a day out among the donkeys and alpacas at the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes’ drive), while science buffs might appreciate a chance to peer at the universe through telescopes at The Spaceguard Centre (50 minutes, don’t miss the views over the Welsh hills into Shropshire). Combine sightseeing with history by visiting the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition at the Norman cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes), and if the weather’s behaving, have a jaunt around the colourful flower borders at Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
