Flat, open grass pitches

General

  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the A470, a 10-minute drive from Brecon
  • Peaceful setting next to woodland with a small stream running through

Stand by for action… Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site’s fab family farm location is in a most handy spot for getting out into the Brecon Beacons National Park for days of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking and pretty much any other activity you’re up for in this part of Powys.

And then, stand by for chilling out… for this is a most peaceful location, with spacious pitches backing onto woodland and a small river that’s prime territory for such classic country pursuits as skimming stones and poking about with little fishing nets in search of minnows. Away from the water's edge guests are encouraged to take a walk to meet miniature donkeys Nelly and Milo.

Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a tiptop way to sort dinner on site (firepits are available to hire, with firewood to buy). If the weather’s not up to it (or you’re just in the mood to let someone else do all the work), there are plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants up the road in Brecon.

Work up an appetite for your eats with an hour-long stroll along quiet country paths, or get in the car for the easy 10-minute journey to town along the A470 (also a handy road for getting to other corners of the national park or heading across country to the north or south).

Please note this is a family-friendly site: no open fires, no bad language and no loud music after 10.30pm please.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £0.50 ($0.61) applies for the use of the shower.

Good location, charming and efficient08/11/2020

There are many things to like. The location, just outside Brecon on the A470, is extremely convenient for the Brecon Beacons area. The farm is in a beautiful location, on the banks of a river and they have their own spring water. From the farm you can walk upstream all the way to Pen y Fan.
The campsite is spread across three fields with one dedicated to campers/caravans and the others for tent pitches. There's plenty of space for each pitch and pitches are level.
It's managed by friendly owners with a nice balance between charm and efficiency. They've been running a campsite for a long time, understand the issues involved, and things are kept clean (especially toilets and shower rooms) at all times.

    Disliked:

They charge for showers but the showers have low water pressure and poor temperature control.

The facilities were clean and nice and you could park your car next to your tent. You could chose where to pitch and were given the choice of 2 fields. The family were lovely and relaxed and let us know places to eat and cycle and even came to find us when we couldn’t find the campsite. It was in a lovely quiet setting with a bridge straight onto a country road to walk or cycle into Brecon where theres lots of places to eat and a beautiful canal that take you miles (it only took us 5 minutes to cycle there).

    Disliked:

The campsite location on maps takes you up a Ladies driveway to her house instead of to the campsite. The signs to the actual campsite are quite small and easy to miss when driving down the main road (especially when you’re following directions that take you further up the road and onto the opposite side). However all it took was a phone-call and the owners came and found us and directed us to the site.
The only other thing to note is to make sure you have 50p for the shower, the box will only accept a 50p coin but worth it for the lovely hot shower!! (Take extra if you want more than 5 minutes).

Beautiful setting: by the woodland and stream. Quiet and relaxing. Option to rent the fire pit.

    Disliked:

I felt that it was a bit overpriced at £25 for the facilities provided. I was a bit taken aback that despite the cost per night, they charged extra to use the showers.

The river is gorgeous, lovely walks and waterfalls are a stones throw away. Toilets and showers are exceptionally well kept and the owners are delightful and very helpful. Fantastic location. Fire pits are a fabulous touch. Really peaceful, perfect for families, lone campers or couples.

    Disliked:

The pitch up location is wrong! It’s about 200 yards down the road and on the right. This is not a fault of the campsite, just an admin error!

Local attractions

So much activity awaits in the Brecon Beacons National Park: pick a gentle hike around woods and waterfalls if you want, or get stuck in to scaling Pen y Fan (25 minutes’ drive away and southern Britain’s highest mountain). Horse riders can saddle up at the stables 10 minutes away, while those who like to zoom around on mountain bikes can get some speed up at BikePark Wales (25 minutes).

The outdoorsy antics don’t end there – Brecon’s something of a hub for such things, and activity centres around the town can sort you with rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling. All sound a bit too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (25 minutes) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (20 minutes).

Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area’s other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the book-loving town of Hay-on-Wye. A little further north but worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan valley and the red kite feeding station in Rhyader; both are around an hour’s drive away.

Must see
