Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site: River beside the camping field.

General

  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the A470, a 10-minute drive from Brecon
  • Peaceful setting next to woodland with a small stream running through

Stand by for action… Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site’s fab family farm location is in a most handy spot for getting out into the Brecon Beacons National Park for days of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking and pretty much any other activity you’re up for in this part of Powys.

And then, stand by for chilling out… for this is a most peaceful location, with spacious pitches backing onto woodland and a small river that’s prime territory for such classic country pursuits as skimming stones and poking about with little fishing nets in search of minnows. Away from the water's edge guests are encouraged to meet the site's miniature donkeys, helping to feed them and put them to bed in the evenings.

Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a fine way to sort dinner on site (firepits are available to hire, with firewood to buy). If the weather’s not up to it (or you’re just in the mood to let someone else do all the work), there are plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants up the road in Brecon.

Work up an appetite for your eats with an hour-long stroll along quiet country paths, or get in the car for the easy 10-minute journey to town along the A470 (also a handy road for getting to other corners of the national park or heading across country to the north or south).

Please note this is a family-friendly site: no open fires, no bad language and no loud music after 10.30pm please. Facilities on site include toilets, a washing-up area and free hot showers.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site is in a really lovely location next to a beautiful river. There are waterfall walks from the campsite. It is quiet but only a 10-minute drive to Brecon town which is good for shopping and cafes. The farmer's wife who runs the site is friendly and offers lovely massages and beauty treatments on-site in her treatment room. There is a fridge/freezer and covered washing-up area.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. Maybe another shower for busy times.

Warm and friendly welcome. Helpful host in a convenient location
    Free hot showers
Good washing up area, with a fridge and a kettle
    Good recycling area
    Drinking water easily accessible
    Newer toilets very convenient

    Disliked:

One set of toilets were fine but the older set would benefit from updating (so emergency use only)
Only two showers so have to time it right. The showers themselves were clean but the area behind the door where you hang clothes and change etc would be improved by a thorough clean as they were covered in cobwebs and dust when I visited.

Locket quiet site, they don’t over fill it in the slightest.
Right by the stream, lovely to hear and nice for the kids to play.
Totally free to roam the farm and see all the diff animals and feed them hay, donkeys, cows, chickens, sheep and baby goats.
Owners are really chilled, not full of rules
Lovely facilities, basic, but everything you need and always warm water.
Massive fridge and freezer, very handy
Undercover sink etc gif doing dishes
We just loved it, we’ll be booking to go again in September 😍
You can walk into Brecon town from the campsite down a path by the river, no driving needed!

    Disliked:

I literally can’t think of anything,
people have mentioned the noise of the road, and you can hear the hum of cars, but with the kids running around and happily playing we didn’t notice it, we could also hear the stream all night so it clearly not as loud as some people say.

The relaxed, informal and friendly feel to the campsite, there was plenty of space and the owners and other campers were friendly; the location - alongside a river was just perfect (especially to dip the feet in on a hot day!); fridge / freezer available to use; good to be able to hire firepits; free hot showers and enough toilets so we didn't have to queue; location for walking - were able to walk up Pen y Fan from the campsite (though it is approximately 2 miles to the car park at the start of the walk and a 9 mile round trip so allow enough time, two car parks are in close distance for parking too) we also walked to Brecon (2.5 miles / 30 mins ish from the campsite to the town). We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.

Local attractions

So much activity awaits in the Brecon Beacons National Park: pick a gentle hike around woods and waterfalls if you want, or get stuck in to scaling Pen y Fan (25 minutes’ drive away and southern Britain’s highest mountain). Horse riders can saddle up at the stables 10 minutes away, while those who like to zoom around on mountain bikes can get some speed up at BikePark Wales (25 minutes).

The outdoorsy antics don’t end there – Brecon’s something of a hub for such things, and activity centres around the town can sort you with rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling. All sound a bit too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (25 minutes) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (20 minutes).

Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area’s other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the book-loving town of Hay-on-Wye. A little further north but worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan valley and the red kite feeding station in Rhyader; both are around an hour’s drive away.

Must see
