  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the A470, a 10-minute drive from Brecon
  • Peaceful setting next to woodland with a small stream running through
Stand by for action… Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site’s fab family farm location is in a most handy spot for getting out into the Brecon Beacons National Park for days of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking and pretty much any other activity you’re up for in this part of Powys. And then, stand by for chilling out… for this is a most peaceful location, with spacious pitches backing onto woodland and a small river that’s prime territory for such classic country pursuits as skimming stones and poking about with little fishing nets in search of minnows. Away from the water's edge guests are encouraged to meet the site's miniature donkeys, helping to feed them and put them to bed in the evenings. Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a fine way to sort dinner on site (firepits are available to hire, with firewood to buy). If the weather’s not up to it (or you’re just in the mood to let someone else do all the work), there are plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants up the road in Brecon. Work up an appetite for your eats with an hour-long stroll along quiet country paths, or get in the car for the easy 10-minute journey to town along the A470 (also a handy road for getting to other corners of the national park or heading across country to the north or south). Please note this is a family-friendly site: no open fires, no bad language and no loud music after 10.30pm please. Facilities on site include toilets, a washing-up area and hot showers (just take note that during popular times, the water pressure may be a little lower than usual).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Our 3rd visit to this lovely site after a day hiking in the surrounding landscape. Very welcoming, hosts - allow fires on site and by far the best shower block of any campsite I have ever visited. Endless HOT water and heated towel rails!

Disliked Nothing - really lovely site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great facilities on site, welcoming host and some of the cleanest showers and toilets on a campsite I’ve seen. Plenty of space to run around if the weather permits, with access to visit the animals on site.

Disliked The only negative from our visit was the weather and, but this is of no fault of the campsite and could not have been predicted or helped, and the very vocal donkeys in the early hours, but his just added to the experience. However the warm showers and heated towel rail definitely helped in this cold and wet situation.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spacious pitches with plenty of braziers/fire pits for which you can get wood at the site for a campfire. Very picturesque location right on a river and based on a working farm. Everyone working at the site/ on the farm were very friendly, nice people. There are free hot showers and the kitchen/ washing up area had two large sinks, a fridge, freezer, kettles and a microwave.

Disliked The kitchen/ washing up area was a bit messy/ mucky at times (not to the detriment of our stay).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Good sized level pitches with EHU. Drinking water available.
Well marked bin facilities.
Great washing up area with dish soap and scourers, a lovely touch.
Toilet and shower block is modern and the heated towel rails are lovely in the wet rooms.
Amazingly good wi-fi.
Lovely greeting with information about local walks shared.

Could see that when busy, the facilities may not cope with the volume, but as with everything, a little give and take goes a long way! Toilet paper ran out one morning but the crew are onsite and clean and service the areas regularly.

River runs alongside the camping fields and plenty of walks straight from the site.

Lots of animals and birds, which brings noise but the best kind!

The only slight issue was the lack of pitch etiquette from some of the other campers, people walked into the hard standing and grass area on our pitch even with us sitting right there, nothing to do with the site, but it felt intrusive.

Disliked Nothing

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly and responsive owners, clean loos and nice views. It's a working site so enjoy seeing the donkeys, lambs and goats, but don't be surprised if you hear them from time to time. Path to Pen Y Fan right from the site. Had a nice chat with the owners and saw two shooting stars one evening when sitting out in front of a camp fire.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful camp site, easy access, very friendly and happy owners, helpful in every way. The farm animals were amazing the little baby lamps and baby goats. I will definitely be back their, the site where we camped was beside a river the children loved playing near the edge.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely site with good sized pitches and not too close. Nice showers and toilets. Really close to a river which would be great to swim in if the weather is good. Easy walk to Breacon. Having the animals near by was lovely especially as it was lambing when we went.

Disliked Occasional water supply issues but quickly fixed.

Local attractions

So much activity awaits in the Brecon Beacons National Park: pick a gentle hike around woods and waterfalls if you want, or get stuck in to scaling Pen y Fan (25 minutes’ drive away and southern Britain’s highest mountain). Horse riders can saddle up at the stables 10 minutes away, while those who like to zoom around on mountain bikes can get some speed up at BikePark Wales (25 minutes). The outdoorsy antics don’t end there – Brecon’s something of a hub for such things, and activity centres around the town can sort you with rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling. All sound a bit too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (25 minutes) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (20 minutes). Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area’s other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the book-loving town of Hay-on-Wye. A little further north but worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan valley and the red kite feeding station in Rhyader; both are around an hour’s drive away.
