  • Peaceful garden site on a Scottish farm 15 minutes’ drive from Perth
  • Dundee half an hour’s drive; Edinburgh and Glasgow an hour by train
  • Café and gift shop on site; pubs, takeaways and shops 15 minutes’ walk
Looking for a peaceful Perthshire hideaway? At 15 minutes’ drive from Perth on the River Tay, Kilgraston Farm has just a clutch of pitches tucked under a canopy of trees in a sprawling farmhouse garden. It is a handy central Scotland base for exploring as far afield as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee by train or bus, and into the Cairngorms National Park by car. On-site facilities encompass a shower and composting toilet, a barbecue for shared use and outdoor seating. The owners can provide electric hook-ups, and as there is a café – cutely housed in a yurt – on site, you can order breakfast, soups and homemade cakes to keep you going through the day. In need of a souvenir or two? Pick up locally made ceramics and scanted candles from the farm’s flower/gift shop. Bridge of Earn (15 minutes’ walk) has all basic facilities, from a post office to a pharmacy, as well as three pubs, a fish and chip shop and takeaways.

Local attractions

There is an easy circular stroll directly from the site, leading through a wood now inhabited by beavers. If you fancy a decent hike combined with a dollop of history, head for Moncrieffe Hill (45 minutes’ walk); as well as a variety of trails and far-reaching views over Perthshire, there’s a brace of Iron Age hill forts to discover. Lively Perth (15 minutes’ drive) has decent shopping options, a leisure pool, concert hall and cinema (all good ideas for rainy-day distractions). When the weather’s good, you can also stroll along the banks of the Tay, discover the gardens at North and South Inch, and have a yomp through woodland up Kinoull Hill. If you’re keen to explore further afield, the spectacular galleries and museums of Edinburgh and Glasgow are both about an hour away by train. Dundee (half an hour’s drive) also makes a great day trip, with inspirational art displays at the V&A Dundee and its dramatic concrete façade designed to replicate the cliffs of Scotland’s eastern coastline.
