  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include two toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Liked It is in the middle of nowhere but alost 1 hour away from Hawick and Carlisle on the A7

The animals on site added a lot of enjoyment to the kids experience.

The river is really nice for the kids to dip their toes in.

Friendly owners

Fire pits available from the site.

Disliked One shower cube and 2 toilets, to be fair to them, they were installing 2 more toilet cubes as we were leaving.

There is no drinking water tap near or in the middle of the pitchs just near the toilets

The hot water is just warm.

Power optional campsite

Liked Lovely spacious pitch, so peaceful, facilities basic but clean & tidy. Extra toilet block delivered while we were there to get plumbed in. Weather was gorgeous. Kids loved seeing the animals & playing down in the river. Couldn't really ask for much more for the price. It was perfect.

Liked Easy access site. We used as a stopover which was absolutely perfect. It’s a great site with very reasonable prices. Basic facilities but all clean and tidy. Couldn’t really ask for anything else. Having a walk round the small farm was a winner with the little one. Would recommend.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, good location just over the Scottish border. Lovely enclosed dog run for the pooches, plenty of places to take a walk, well maintained lawns, lots of animals to say hi to such as chickens and ducks. I have some mobility issues and asked for a pitch close to the toilet block, the site staff made sure that I was as close as I could be. Site suitable for a wheelchair, walker or sticks.

Disliked 2 toilets and 1 shower for the whole site can get very busy, if we were staying more than a couple of nights I think this would have worn thin at peak times.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
