  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include four toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

What customers say

A friendly, well-kept campsite with ample pitches and lovely scenery. Praised for its clean ablutions and welcoming hosts, with farm animals a big hit, especially with kids. Facilities can be basic and busy at peak times, but offers great value and a peaceful spot for unwinding and exploring.

Electric pitch

Liked I was made up with this site from start to finish. Facilities were so clean every day, at all times of day and night. When walking to the facilities in the dark, the site had little motion sensor lights to help light the path as you walk. The grass was kept very nice and the owners took pride in keeping the place in shape. There are animals for the kids to see if they like (no feeding as it’s not a petting zoo but plenty to say hi to if you have kids like mine who just love all animals - sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and a lovely dog). Across the grass field, a very short walk for even the shortest of legs, there is a lovely shallow river and a tree swing. Owners were easily contactable and friendly and the views were lovely in amongst the hills. Noise levels really low and despite all the farm animals close by to the camping pitches, there were no bad smells at all. Only thing I would say is take a portable potty for night time if you have little ones as you probably wouldn’t want to walk to the toilets in the dark as there is a little picnic area between you and the toilets which my kids wouldn’t walk in the dark or rain in the night. I think most with little kids would expect to have to do this anyway. No shop on site but plenty within a very easy drive either way on one stretch of road. If you take a cool box for the first night, there’s plenty of places to stock up nearby (with a car - not a walk). Wouldn’t come to the Scottish Borders in general if you have kids who need constant entertainment as it isn’t a particularly activity packed area within the immediate vicinity - it’s more a ‘make your own fun in nature’ kind of place, which suited us perfect. Overall a really lovely experience and low price.

Liked The animals and stream were lovely and staff were welcoming, it was a nice the guy coming round asking who wanted firewood ect. The spaces were nice because they were fenced off so you knew what space was yours. But the chains for the fences could have been lit up or a different colour to black because this is hard to see when you need to get up for the toilet during the night.

Disliked When we first arrived there was nothing appealing about the sight at 1st glance, it looked like a run down trailer park which made me worry about the place i was about to stay, there's only 1 shower, which I did already know about but didn't anticipate the amount of people that would be staying there, it's quite grubby in the shower room that is there, but needs must when you're out on the road and need to get a shower. Our last night was very roudy and loud with a family of campers taking over the park a bit with shouting and swearing and playing load music which I do love music myself but not happy hardcover or something similar when I was happy trying to listen to my own at a level that the whole park couldn't hear.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay, we do provide a mop in the shower which we hope people use to mop the shower out after they have used it, but unfortunately I cannot be around to follow every person to the shower to ensure this is done, it was busy as we are in the big school holidays.
I am not quite sure what you mean by a run down trailer park, the place is a 7 acre field with a small campsite, sheep goats chickens duck and pigs, but if you mean the first static that you see when you arrive, yes this is old but it is not run down and this is where we as a family live.
We did have a family stay during your stay who did book 4 separate pitches, they where asked to keep the noise down.

Excellent site, friendly staff, hood country and level itches.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Position in the hills of the borders, animals in a field as part, of the campsite, decent size grass plots.

Disliked It's a new campsite and there are not enough showers or water points at the moment but I was told they will increase in number soon.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
