  • Family site with spectacular Carlingford Lough views, County Down
  • Mourne Mountains 15 minutes’ drive; Skypark of Carlingford 20 minutes
  • Basics shop and pool room; Cranfield Beach accessed directly from site
Close to the southernmost point of Northern Ireland, in County Down, Folks on the Hill is a top spot for beach activities (crescent-shaped Cranfield Beach is just a couple of minutes’ walk away) and all sorts of outdoor adventures. This is because it sits within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is laced with hiking paths, mountain-biking trails and climbing routes – and they all come with spectacular views over Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains (15 minutes’ drive). Mind you, those views can also be admired from your grass pitch on site, since Folks on the Hill is set on an elevated spot with far-reaching vistas. Facilities on site are basic but clean, and they include a couple of toilets, an electric shower and a kitchen where guests can prep their own food, perhaps with the produce sourced from the small on-site store. For anything else you need, the shops in Kilkeel (five minutes) include a fishmonger’s, a butcher’s and an off-licence, plus a couple of small supermarkets. In terms of on-site entertainment, there is a pool room for family tournaments; however, it’s likely that most guests will want to make the most of the proximity to the beach, and have an invigorating swim or a go at paddleboarding or canoeing. The beach also features a play park and an adult fitness zone.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Good spacious site, clean and accessible toilets, great wee bistro at other side of nearby campsite!

Disliked No place we could find close to get a drink. Fish & chip van nearby only took cash, and no off-license! Shower was impossible as only one !
Not the easiest place to find, no obvious signage

From the manager: Hello

The shop beside the campsite sold drink. The sold coke-cola Fanta and even iron bru. Something for everyone tastes. Off licence was a five minute drive away in a local cost cutters shop. Plumber let us down with shower. No local plumber wants small jobs as they are all living the high live on what they call the "Dublin rate." As for a sign, I had a large sign but was asked to take it down as I have limited planning on my campsite. The fact the chippy only took cash is totally out of my hands as it's neither owned or run by me.

Kind Regards Folks on the hill campsite

once we located the place it was perfect for us as a campsite.

Liked Location and views were fantastic. pitches were well arranged and the owner was a lovely chatty chap. overall we were delighted. Awesome views across to the mountains.

Disliked No Clear signage at the entrance, we went past it about 3 times trying to locate the entrance. Had to rely on Google in the end.

Powered grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Gorgeous gorgeous views 😍
Great campsite near the beach, a little shop and chip van. Nice friendly owner who gave lots of information on nearby attractions.

Disliked Only 1 shower and 2 toilets! Over 25 tents pitched when we stayed and the facilities do not match the number of people using them. They were unkempt due to the level of people using them.
More showers needed!
Also the Shepard's hut could do with more sinks and hot water.
This is something that could be easily rectified as it's such a beautiful site.

Primitive grass and gravel tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great little campsite! I brought my girlfriend here for her first camping trip, and she absolutely loved it—we’re actually heading back again this weekend 😊. The toilets were clean, and there’s a shop just five minutes from the site. The beach is about the same distance, and if you need to pop into town, Kilkeel and Asda aren’t far either. The views are amazing—ocean on one side and mountains on the other. Just a tip: bring a mallet, as the ground can be pretty hard 😂.

Local attractions

Take a lake cruise with Carlingford Lough Ferry, which you can board from Greencastle (five minutes’ drive). Cruises run during the summer season, and they often have a music theme, with tribute bands or DJs. Sail along the coastline, taking in views of the mountains just as the sun sets. In the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Mourne Park House (10 minutes) is a heritage building surrounded by spectacular ancient woodland that’s home to red squirrels, otters and pine martens, plus cuckoo birds. In the spring, carpets of bluebells stretch among the chestnut and fir trees. The Skypark of Carlingford (20 minutes), across the lough in the Republic of Ireland, has a range of thrilling outdoor adventures – from aerial courses with ziplines, to a huge multi-level bouncing net – plus miniature and frisbee golf, a maze and archery.
