Little acres camping

  • Farm site in the countryside a mile from Armagh city centre
  • Navan Centre and Loughgall Country Park within a 10-minute drive
  • On the banks of the Callan River for trout fishing
Town day or rural day – which one do you fancy today? You can pick and choose as you go when you’re staying at Little Acres Camping, in the Co. Armagh countryside two miles from Armagh’s centre (and with some great views over to the spires of the city’s two cathedrals). When those views put you in the mood for the former, it’s a five-minute drive or half-hour walk to get to the city streets for visits to those cathedrals, the museums and the planetarium/observatory. And of course that proximity means that it’s easy to get out for an evening in the pub, something to eat or to source supplies to chuck on your barbecue back at base. And when you’d rather stick to the rural side of things? There are plenty of places to get out for walks and bike rides nearby, plus activities like horse riding and fishing in local lakes (although you could also stick around on site for that – rather handily, Little Acres Camping is on the banks of the Callan River, which is renowned for its trout fishing). Back at base, the essential facilities are covered: guests have access to toilets and a washing-up area, and staff can organise pick-ups from town if you’re arriving by public transport.

FHU grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked It’s a delightfully well thought out little 15 plot site. There is a lovely children’s playground and a covered sitting area for the bad weather. Don’t be put off by the washrooms being in a container, many sites use this method, inside has incredible attention to detail with slip free matting, many mirrors and hooks (so important) various expensive liquid soaps and shampoos provided, hanging plants and very well cleaned. it’s more like a spa than a campsite. Finally the owner is friendly and helpful. Our best site so far on this holiday.

Disliked There is nothing to dislike.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked What a wonderful site, with friendly hosts as well as fantastic amenities. The campsite is very family friendly, very clean and safe. This was our first time here and it most definitely will not be our last! Also, it is very convenient to the local town incase you have forgotten anything for your trip!

Disliked My only disappointment was that I couldn't bring my wee dog with me, but this has not put me off in the slightest.

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We received details of our plot number (and the all important number for the Campers' kitchen) on the morning of our scheduled arrival, as previously indicated. Joanne came over to introduce herself and check everything was all right very soon after she was free from her prior engagement, which was good to see.

The pitches are VERY spacious, and considerately laid out, with very reasonable distances to the EHUs. For the most part, a lot of effort has been put into making level nearly all of the pitches with EHUs, which is no mean feat on the rolling hills of Armagh. It was much appreciated!

The Campers' kitchen is a wonderful facility, with two sinks for washing up, some crockery for communal use - PLEASE wash up if you use them!, a Microwave, a toaster, and an electric kettle. Fabulous! There are also two small tables with 3 seats at each, so you can eat in there, if you so wish.

Although we didn't use the play area (haven't done for over 50 years - ha ha!), there had clearly been a great deal of thought put into the number of climbing frames, swings, scooters, pedal-carts, etc., to cater for the families who use it.

And, as a precautionary measure, there are notices to remind people to keep any barbecues at least 18" above the grass.

When we arrived, there were several families there (in tents), and the children were wonderfully behaved in keeping away from "the grey nomads". And, noise levels were significantly reduced, indeed almost minimal, from about 8.30pm, even though it was a bright, sunny evening. (My compliments to the families involved!)

When a French couple arrived late on the Sunday night, Joanne went out of her way to ensure they could make onward bookings for other sites during their trip around the island of Ireland. It was noticeable to us, that she spoke extra clearly to enable them to understand what she was saying. (When we spoke to them later, they expressed (again) their appreciation of how she had welcomed them.)

Disliked The Toilet and Shower block - as you go in,
* at the left-most end, screened by a partition board, are the urinals, and three wash basins;
* immediately ahead are the toilet cubicles, and some more wash basins - no sex discrimination here!; and,
* at the right-most end, is the single shower.

There is no private cubicle where someone could have, say, a stand-up wash, or wet shave at a sink.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I prefer segregation for Men and Women's toilet facilities. I understand that such facilities cost money, but I would hope that some planning for the future would include such enhancements.

And this next bit is NOT the fault of the Little Acres Campsite, but I have to mention it...
Access to the site is up a narrow country lane, so caution is important, especially as you approach a bend or hidden dip; thankfully, there were no racing-car drivers about.)

FHU grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Quiet and very clean. Owner was lovely, she called round to make sure everything was OK during our stay. Very personable and really appreciated.

Disliked The road up to it is very tight, thankfully it's quiet. I wouldn't like to see two cars towing caravans to meet anywhere on this road...

FHU grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Very quiet campsite in a beautiful landscape.

Disliked There was a single steel clad industrial toilet block with men and women sharing the same cramped toilets. Toilet block was cold and the hand driers did not work, nor were there any hand towels.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi
Our toilet facilities are communal with separate toilets and showers. In the near future we aim to provide another toilet block most likely with ladies and gents separate areas. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of the toilet block. Its unfortunate you found them cold; maybe something to do with the time of year (April). Hand dryers working perfectly.

Local attractions

Start with a stroll into Armagh to see its two cathedrals (both called St Patrick’s – don’t get confused…), visit the Armagh County Museum and Armagh Gaol and see what’s on at the Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre. The Armagh Astronomy Centre and Planetarium is worth a visit too, to see the light displays of star constellations and let kids dress up and make their own rockets. A little way out of town (10 minutes’ drive from the site) is Navan Centre & Fort, an archaeological site where costumed characters bring the Celtic legends to life on guided tours. Things are rather more refined at Ardress House and The Argory, a pair of smart stately homes about 15 minutes’ drive away. If it’s outdoor activities on the schedule, head out for walks in Loughgall Country Park (10 minutes) and Gosford Forest Park (20 minutes) or a stroll by the water at Craigavon Lake (half an hour). There’s a golf course at Loughgall as well, or you could take a tour of the orchards at Armagh Cider Company (15 minutes) for a taste of what’s known as ‘the orchard county’.
