A great morning sky

  • Peaceful site with fishing lake and rod hire available
  • Easily accessible, half a mile from the A431 between Bath and Bristol
  • Village shop and pub within walking distance
Bath or Bristol? Have easy access to both at Boyd Valley Lake, set down a quiet country lane half a mile from the A431 between both cities. This is a nifty base for city and countryside days: it’s just under eight miles from here to both Bristol and Bath, and the site’s Greater Bristol setting is in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for gentle strolls and nature spotting. For day trips, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester are all within an hour’s drive and mighty Stonehenge within an hour and 10 minutes. In between all that, retreat for peaceful days on site at the one and three quarter-acre fishing lake suitable for all abilities of angler; hire a rod from the Boyd Valley Lake team to try your luck landing carp, bream, barbel and many more slippery species. There’s plenty of space around these green grounds for wanders – and picnics – too. The village shop and local pub are within walking distance, and two garden centres and coffee shops are within a mile.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Plenty of room, picked our own pitch

Disliked No where to book in , parked up , went out later for a meal, had to drive, no way was it walking distance, single track lane, with no footpath, left without meeting any staff, could have drove in and left without paying

From the manager: Hi John,

Thank you for your feedback.

As advertised on our website we operate a self check-in system, allowing guests to arrive and choose their pitch without needing to meet staff on arrival. Our team are often working across the site during the day and evening, particularly in peak weather conditions such as the recent heatwave in which you arrived, but are always contactable if needed.

Our mobile contact number is displayed on all main gate signage for any assistance during a stay.

In terms of local amenities, the nearest pub (The Upton Inn) is approximately a 20-minute walk, with a further option around 30 minutes away. Guests are of course welcome to walk or drive depending on preference and comfort, particularly given the rural setting and single-track lanes without pavements.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback.

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, solo)

Liked The spots with shadows as I camped during the heat wave 38 degrees.

Disliked Bathrooms, toilets cleaness - the urine smell from men toilets faced to the wash up sinks, female showers not clean, bathroom floor always wet (myself I cleaned it all once), never saw any staff cleaning facilities. Sometimes sinks were parcial bocked. Drainage pipes to a hole in the bathroom. People wash clothes in the shower. Garbage disposal, bins with a disgusting bad smell, litter on the floor. In all the fields could be seen litter. Be carful not steping goose poo. The fields are not tidy, grass not cared, full of weedsThere are horses confined to hot and small field. Advertised you will be banished if you don't behave according with rules! Read in another reviews the owner will try to exclude from pitch up the costumers who give bad reviews.

From the manager: Hi Maryann, Thank you for your feedback.

The campsite toilets and shower blocks are cleaned on a regular schedule throughout the day, with additional checks during peak periods such as the recent heatwave. Our team were on-site during your stay, including attending the facilities when toilet supplies were queried and checked at the time.

We have reviewed the points raised regarding cleanliness, drainage and bins. No ongoing blockages or drainage issues have been identified, and bins are emptied regularly as part of site maintenance.

The site is a rural campsite with livestock and wildlife in surrounding areas, including geese and horses on designated parts of the wider land, which is clearly signed as private areas and not part of the camping pitches.

We take all feedback seriously and continue to maintain and improve the site throughout the season.

Local attractions

Want to stay close to base on days you’re not out sightseeing in Bristol or Bath? Steam along to the Avon Valley Railway a mile and a half from the site for a vintage train ride on its three-mile run through peaceful countryside (check opening times before setting out as the railway is generally only open on weekends and during school holidays). If you’d prefer to get about under your own steam, it’s a mile from Boyd Valley Lake to the Bristol to Bath cycle track, the 13-mile traffic free route between both cities. Opt to walk or cycle the path (access is provided for wheelchairs too), stopping off along the way to spot sculptures and old steam engines: the track is also an art trail and passes the steam engines at Bitton station. Options further afield include Cheddar Gorge, Wells and Wookey Hole, all 50 minutes’ drive away, and the National Trust-managed Dyrham Park (15 minutes), Prior Park Landscape Garden (25 minutes), Lacock Abbey (35 minutes) and Tyntesfield Victorian house (40 minutes).
