  • Family-friendly farm site a 10-minute drive from Westbury, Wiltshire
  • Bratton White Horse five minutes’ drive; Bath 40 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; cycle hire; about a half-hour walk from the village pub
Set within the Salisbury Plain escarpment in rural Wiltshire and on the edge of the Bratton Downs, Country View Camping is an established retreat. Surrounded by stunning scenery, walks and medieval history sites, this is a place for people passionate about the outdoors. As well as being family-friendly, the site welcomes well-behaved dogs. The field is dotted with round hay bales (in season only, of course) and overlooked by gentle slopes known for the Bratton White Horse, a gigantic silhouette of a horse carved into the chalky hill and visible for miles around. It takes about five minutes’ drive to reach this local landmark, or a 40-minute walk. It’s also possible to hire a bike on site and get there on two wheels in about 10 minutes. Keen hikers will have a vast choice of potential destinations here – from Clanger Wood (five minutes), a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its populations of butterflies, moths and nightingales, to the paths along the River Avon (like the Millennium Riverside walk, 15 minutes). You’re also between two National Landscapes here: Cranborne Chase (20 minutes) and North Wessex Downs (35 minutes) for further scenic trails. Barbecues are provided, but if you’d rather not bother with cooking, there are a handful of pubs in the area serving traditional food, including one in Bratton (five minutes, or a 25-minute walk). The farm is also a 10-minute drive from the market town of Westbury where there are further dining venues. The site has a toilet block and showers, plus charging facilities and recycling points.

What customers say

This family-friendly campsite offers a beautiful setting with stunning views, a welcoming atmosphere, and excellent kid's facilities like a playground and bouncy castle. Guests praise the friendly hosts, the on-site bar with good food/drinks, and comfy bell tents. While some noted issues with communal restrooms and minor cleanliness concerns, the manager is addressing feedback. It's a "hidden gem" with planned improvements.

Bell tent

Liked The location was beautiful. Beds were clean and comfy. There was a bar on site. Showers were clean but water was cold. Owners were lovely. I think this site is in its early days and would be better in a few years.

Disliked The tent was really moldy. They wanted an extra £40 for the fire pit- it should be included. Most of the toilets had ‘out of order’ on, only one was working. There was a cockral in the adjacent field constantly making noise.

Bell tent

Liked We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The owner Patrick upgraded us on arrival which we were so grateful for.

The cabin was very spacious, plenty of sockets to charge devices and the mattresses were comfy.

The toilet/shower facilities were kept clean and tidy and we were happy about the shower blocks being large enough to store your clothes/ get changed in there.

It was also nice to have a pint in the pub after a long day travelling with the bonus of free entertainment.

Finally, we liked the fact that they had trolleys to carry your bags to the cabins, saved doing multiple trips.

Bell tent

Liked The kids facilities. Great to have a playground, bouncy castle and space for football. Kids loved being at the playground first thing in the morning.

The view was lovely.

Disliked The toilet/sink/shower block was not pleasant. Toilets should be separate to showers at least and was not particularly clean.

The camp beds for the kids were really uncomfortable and generally didn't find the bell tents that cosy or comfortable. For the cost I didn't think it was worth it and honestly not sure why the ratings are so high.

Bell tent

Liked This was great - such a nice bar (with great Guinness!) for parents, bouncy castle for the kids, lovely bell tent for us all (comfy beds, amazing lighting) and a brilliant time cooking and toasting marshmallows on the hired fire pit bbq kit. Paddy was a tireless and entertaining host. A really good time.

Disliked Not a fan of the toilet/shower/washroom block (although the showers were good!) - it's all there in one shared room basically (unisex) which made me slightly uncomfortable when my young daughter headed off to use the facilities in the night.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Playground and bouncy castle had my child entertained so much he was not all interested in anything else. The campsite has a lovely view.

Disliked Cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired, especially around the club house area and the toilets. Can’t rely on the cafe being open for breakfast. Don’t forget it’s camping so that means catering for yourself!

Liked Hospitality of the hosts. Onsite bar and great views.

Disliked Not much to do in the local town. Walks were nice and the view from the white horse was amazing, but quiet spot otherwise.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked The welcome was amazing from Patrick. Everything was explained clearly and he was always willing to help.
The site was generally quiet in a beautiful setting with stunning views
The showers were hot, you could park by your tent, pop in to the bar to play pool or grab a drink and you could freeze your freezer blocks.

Disliked (Purely personal taste) I don't like mixed-sex / communal toilets and showers. Otherwise it was great!

Local attractions

A bag of feed will allow you to get up close and personal with some of the more greedy residents at Fairfield Animal Centre (15 minutes’ drive). Here you can also take alpacas and goats for a walk around the grounds, or help the keepers groom and feed the donkeys. The large play area includes wooden climbing structures. Among the National Trust properties in the vicinity are Westwood Manor (20 minutes) and Prior Park Landscape Garden (35 minutes). The former dates from the late 15th century and is popular for its garden, with a lily pond and topiary hedges. The latter, in a valley near Bath, is a Georgian park dotted with follies such as the elegant Palladian Bridge. A terrace adorned with Victorian-era statues of ancient emperors overlooks the sunken Roman Baths in Bath (40 minutes). A museum displays artefacts unearthed on site, including a bronze head of the goddess Minerva and thousands of silver coins, part of the Beau Street Hoard.
